“Great Place to Start Your Kenyan Adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2010

We stayed here for two nights before our safari started, we arrived late at night and had arranged with Macushla for us to be picked up from the airport by a driver. This worked pefectly, the hotel is probably about 30 mins drive from the airport (depending on time of day). After arriving we were welcomed and led to our rooms, we had a double and a twin. They were both lovely rooms. Just before we turned in, we had a cup of Kenyan tea/coffee which was very much appreciated after being on the go for 15 hours.

The hotel is located in the Karen suburb which is a quieter upmarket area and ideally located if you want to visit the attractions in Karen such as the Kazuri Bead Factory and Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary.

Breakfast was great with a wide array of cooked items and / or cereals etc. We also had an evening meal which was also of good quality.

Hot water bottles in the beds at night along with mosquito nets meant a nice comfortable nights sleep.

The grounds and communal rooms are lovely and the staff very friendly and efficient. Particular thanks to Nancie who I corresponded with when making the booking, Peter for his hospitality in the evenings and Wilson for doing an excellent job on the rooms. But everyone was very friendly.

As you will probably find out, staying in Nairobi is pretty tricky to do on a 'middle of the road' budget as hotels appear to be very expensive so if you want a safe quiet stay with good travelling distance to lots of the Nairobi sights I think Macushla is good value choice.

We stayed here for two consecutive nights before our safari and thoroughly enjoyed our stay and met some lovely people.

The hotel is located in Karen which is a much quieter upmarket area compared to central Nairobi and ideally located if you want to visit the attractions in Karen such as the Giraffe Centre and the Elephant Sanctuary. You can walk up the road the Giraffe centre very easily.

Our room was very spacious and comfortable and the hotel grounds are small but lovely. We saw a couple of wedding parties arrive at the hotel to have photographs taken at the grounds.

The staff and service however were fantastic and made sure you had everything you needed at all times. The tea and coffee brought to your room in the mornings before breakfast was also a lovely touch.

Breakfast was great, with a large choice of cooked items and the evening meals were also good.

The only downside was the shower in our room. The water pressure was very low and we ended up running a bath to wash hair etc.

We also stayed at the Country Lodge (on our way back from the Safari) and checked out the Fairview. Both are very nice and do cost less however we enjoyed our stay here far more.

Definately recommended.

We stayed at Macushla House for one night at the beginning of our holiday and one night at the end of our holiday. We wished we had stayed here for longer. Macushla House has such a good feel about it. The staff are very friendly, the food fantastic and the rooms are all different.

On our first night, we actually stayed in the cottage which has two bedrooms and is set to the back of the house. What an amazing place!! The decor is outstanding!!

There is a bar, swimming pool, two lounges with open fires and a study area.

Do not hesitate to stay here - you will not be disappointed!!

Macushla House is a relaxing, very attractive place to stay in the suburb of Karen. If you seek personal, gracious service, a warm atmosphere, good food and drink, and friendly hosts, look no further. This is of course a small hotel, so don't expect the Four Seasons. However, it is stylishly decorated, the grounds are lovely, monkeys hop around the trees, there's a resident cat, and the yard is good for birders. I'd love to make Macushla House my home away from home in Nairobi. Many thanks to Walter, the afternoon/evening shift waiter/bartender/etc., and to Caroline, one of the hosts. Great job, great hotel!

Only had dinner; rather hard to find it if driving but otherwise a wonderful and unique experience

One of kenya's hidden treasure.Very reasonably priced. For what you pay at the other big name hotels, the quality does not compare to what you will get at Macushla. Our wedding was about 20 mins away and we went to macushla to take our photos. The staff was ready for us when we arrived and they brought the snacks out on time. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we took very beautiful pictures with little interference. We later came to change to go for the evening party and even when we returned at 3am, there was someone waiting for us. This was where we spent our first night after our wedding.. and it was very romantic.
The environment is very peaceful and the rooms are well decorated and very roomy. The honeymoon package is truly worth what you pay and then some...
The service was great and the staff were very courteous. Even as we were making plans before our emails were replied on time and we got information as we requested.
I had the pleasure of meeting the owners of the property and they were very kind and available to answer all my questions.
The breakfast the next morning was very nice. We had plenty to eat and it was brought to our room.
Overall, I would go back to Macushla.

What a great little place... peaceful, charming and authentic. The room they had allocated to my son and I just had one large bed (instead of two twins), they felt so bad about it they offered us an additional room across the hall so that we wouldn’t have to share a bed. Very gracious, very generous offer (two rooms for the price of one!), but we ultimately decided to just stay in one room and share the bed.

Breakfast is interesting... you don’t order in the dining room, but rather fill out a form the night before indicating what you want and at what time.

Lots of lounging areas inside and out, with lots of books and magazines available. Cute little monkeys hang out on the grounds.

My son and I had hoped to spend the day checking out local attractions, but we went down for a nap and didn’t wake up until 8 hours later! The giraffe sanctuary is walking distance, a taxi is unnecessary.

Our driver to Wilson airport was very diligent, he stayed until we got on the flight. We were overweight on our luggage (of course!), but the fees weren’t that bad, $8 per bag each way, for a total of $32. The driver made sure we received a receipt and that it was clearly marked that the fee was not just for one way. He seemed genuinely committed to ensuring that we did not over-pay.
