Owner description: This is the beautiful farmhouse where Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, lived between 1914 and 1931, until she left Kenya after a series of personal tragedies.

You will enjoy this if you enjoyed "Out of Africa". Set on a beautiful property that wasn't used for the movie, you can see a good selection of Karen Blixen's furniture and the lovely house that she enjoyed during her time in Kenya. Local guides will give you a private tour, explaining the history and story. Well worth the visit.

Thank Karen C

The house is smaller than I expected, however the setting is lovely and I had a guide to myself, who answered most of my questions. A small gift shop or tearoom might have been a good idea just to allow the visitor to linger after the tour.

If you saw the film Out of Africa, you will be quite surprised when you first arrive at Karen Blixens home. Very little of it was used in the film.
The home is in good condition and the guided tour is informative and well managed. The guides are 1st class & really know their stuff. Sadly you cannot take pictures while inside the house. The stories as well as the history go into making this attraction worthwhile.

We visited on 1st June and the house is now open although the gift shop isn't, lovely spot full of atmosphere and definitely worth a trip if you liked Out of Africa.

...it's closed right now for refurbishment but when it reopens do go see her house. It's not what you'll see in the movie and you don't need a guide.
