...it's closed right now for refurbishment but when it reopens do go see her house. It's not what you'll see in the movie and you don't need a guide.

&Beyond took me here after stopping at the Giraffe Center (also reviewed) before my flight home from Nairobi. Admittedly, I am a fan of both Karen Blixen's writing and the film "Out of Africa" so I may be a bit biased but I enjoyed my hour or so here. The museum isn't too expensive (the exchange rate between US dollars and Kenyan shillings being what it is) and the estate itself is beautifully maintained. Learning a bit more about the estate (e.g. how it used to be on the outskirts and now seems to be solidly within Nairobi) as well as see a mix of Blixen's own property and set props was enjoyable. Overall, a restful way to pass the time (and much better than sitting in the Nairobi airport which leaves a little to be desired when compared to Jo-burg's).

For anyone traveling to Nairobi in the next few months- SKIP THE KAREN BLIXEN MUSEUM! It is under renovation. They are charging 500 Kenya Shillings to walk through an empty house with a bored guide looking for a tip and take a 2 minute walk on the grounds. If you are staying in downtown Nairobi, the traffic to the museum is not worth it.

The house was being renovated so the furniture and artefacts were under wraps but nevertheless the guide gave us a great insight into KB's life and experience. The gardens and views are excellent too!

As a Dane visiting Kenya I'm kind of obliged to visit the world famous Danish author Karen Blixen's home a little outside Nairobi. Only to learn that half of the content of the house comes the movie "Out of Africa" (Merryl Streep, Robert Redford). And only to realize that I know more about Ms. Blixen's life than the young guides showing us around. The house and the garden are very charming seen from the outside, but inside it's a big disappointment. Even to a Dane.
