“Excellent displays of the evolution of humankind in Africa.”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

This museum is more of a historical and natural-history museum, rather than a fine-arts museum. It has some excellent exhibits of some of the skulls and other artifacts of pre-human primates. There is also an excellent collection of documents and photos of the history of Kenya, and a very impressive collection of stuffed birds, as well as the major big animals.

“Great place to know more about Kenya”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Gives you a good idea of the country in terms of natural history and its people. Some exhibits are better than others but overall a good place to spend some time and learn about the country. Recommended for families with kids and tourists. Their annual 'Know Kenya' course seems greatly appreciated by those who participated (often new expat arrivals in Kenya).

“Disappointing considering the wealth of Kenyan culture that could be included, but the hominid skulls make up for it.”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

When you consider that over 40 different tribes, each with their own distinct culture, make up the Kenyan Nation, only a tiny fraction is represented here.

I suppose the best artifacts have long since been taken away to grace museum halls across the waters in Europe and elsewhere, but it would be nice to see some of these returning "home" in the future.

There is a fascinating section on the colonial history of Kenya and the sometimes painful transition to independence and beyond, along with some good natural history displays.

However, the highlight of my trip was the section dealing with human evolution, which boasts what is probably the most significant collection of hominid skulls and other remains from our earliest humanoid ancestors. Well worth the entrance fee for these alone.

The one negative was the exorbitant prices charged in the book store / gift shop. Buy elsewhere if you can - it's much cheaper. I'd also avoid the coffee shop unless all you want are the basics. Use the washrooms inside the main building, too - the outdoor ones are probably the filthiest in Nairobi!

+ Well worth getting a guide. Really liked most of the exhibits.
- Our tour felt a little rushed, ask them to go at your pace.

“Awesome museum!”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

We visited the museum on our last day of our Safari trip to Kenya and were pleasantly surprised at its size and quality. We were given a tour by an intern who was extremely knowledgeable of Kenyan History, culture and wildlife. We learned a lot of Kenyan history, culture and of the many wildlife we had just seen on safari. A must visit if you have the time.
