“Worth the Rating..but”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2012

Two nights Safari bound and one night on return.
First two nights in room 54 in the old building across the road was hard to reconcile as a first Class room. It presented to me as something like an old style sixties "up market" motel room and was a long walk from the hotel proper through two security gates and across a trafficked roadway..( admittedly also through a nice garden as long as it is not raining)
The room was in very good condition and quite clean.. but...
On return I asked for a better room for comparison and was give room 7 in the main complex.
This was more like it, and earns a tick as meeting my expectations.
All other aspects of the site are as per the general run of reviews ; an excellent property with ambience service and security.
I would certainly select this hotel for a return visit, but would choose my room carefully on booking.

Room Tip: Choose carefully on booking and seek a room in the hotel proper as it may be an inconvenient journey...

Other hotels in Kenya should send their staff here to train. Outstanding Staff!
After two weeks of touring Kenya this was our last stop before flying out.
Great gardens, ample restaurants, free wi-fi....rooms could be updated a little but it is an old world lodge.
Great to have a hot shower with water pressure before flying home.
We'll be back,

Superb place, I had a great experience staying here for a week. It is easy to see why this hotel has such good reviews on this site. The expansive protected grounds, different types of accommodation, meandering inner courtyards, lovely garden, wide range of bars and restaurants makes this an excellent location for anyone staying in Nairobi. Also really good business conference location with very professional support. Staff are friendly, welcoming and professional. I gather from my local colleagues that the rooms received a face lift and the cuisine was revamped with a new chef a few years ago, and that locally this is also now a place to come to. I will always come here given a choice and would recommend highly to anyone.

So why not five stars? There are a couple of areas that let them down in my view. First, although I rather like the simple, no frills style of the business class rooms (you can always upgrade to a first class room if you want aircon, fridges etc), the home-from-home feeling mentioned by another reviewer is undermined by the we-don’t-trust-you coat hangers, the measly bar of soap and the lack of a plain towel bath robe. A few little touches that would make all the difference (I don’t need silly little bottles of massage oil etc that some places throw at you).

Secondly (OK my personal bug-bear, not likely to concern everyone), the quality, choice and value of the wine on offer is poor and is a real disconnect with the mostly excellent food (especially the brilliantly showy food in the Pango restaurant). OK, they have a wine bar/cellar with a long list of expensive wines in the Pango, if you want to spend a lot but given the experience with the cheaper house wines, why trust them with the more expensive ones? Basically they have Schalk Berger/Meerkat house wines at the lower price end (e.g. 3,000 Ksh rather than 4,000 or 5,000 plus after that), with one choice of white and red in little 25ml bottles. The white Chenin Blanc is OK, the red ‘blend’ is not very pleasant, but the real point here is they are selling bottles at x10 the wholesale price in SA (Schalk Berger’s retail price for a bottle is 40 Rand). I hear that import duties and merchant costs are high, in which case they should think about buying directly from producers. The real point here is that in almost all respects, the Fairview competes as a high quality international hotel with a difference. Good hotels and restaurants these days all over the world now offer a range of wines by the glass and a good choice at the lower end. Admittedly I have found a similar problem in other Nairobi hotels and even in Mauritius, where you would think they might be able to buy some good South African wines. Could also be the lack of wine buying skills in a country where mainly beer is drunk? Maybe Fairview could see this as an opportunity to really set themselves apart from the rest. Please take these criticisms in that spirit.

Room Tip: Go on-line so you understand the difference between economy, business and first - they suit differen...

Many of our product innovations have come from constructive feedback so thank you for taking the time to comment.

Regarding the wine – you make many points but I will focus on your main one!

We do buy direct from Schalk Berger and other winemakers in Europe to bring great wines at decent prices. When you take account of SGS inspection fee, transport, clearing agent fee, KEBS fee, Duty of 25%, excise duty of 35% and VAT, Service Charge, Income Tax, there is not much left! You will find our wine prices are pretty consistent with our competition and our range far better.

Please next time you stay with us I can arrange a meeting with our Sommelier who will give you an excellent overview of our wines and margins on each bottle.

Regards,

Daniel | Joint Managing Director | Fairview Hotel

We stayed here just one night as we started a safari. Very nice hotel. The security surprised me, but I realized it is this way throughout Nairobi. I felt very safe. The rooms were well equipped and clean. The facility is a little older but in excellent shape. Breakfast was wonderful.

I have stayed in other hotels in Nairobi but will now make Fairview my first choice! Rooms are comfortable, food is outstanding and staff goes well beyond to make stay wonderful. It has been an oasis after long travel. I felt completely safe and welcome. I stayed here last year and am headed back soon!

Room Tip: It is worth it to upgrade to rooms near the pool.
