“Excellent service”
Reviewed July 26, 2011

We loved our stay at the Norfolk. The service is outstanding and food was excellent. Please make sure you book with a breakfast included price else it is quite expensive. Highly recommended for all travellers staying in Nairobi. Comes at a price though!

We stayed her for two horrible nights - 5 and 15 July 2011 - as prearranged by our travel agent. Let's start with our requirement for a wheelchair accessible room: they have ONE. Access is by going up two steps to the hallway leading to the room - no ramp even though a ramp is installed on the other side of the hotel where there are no wheelchair accessible rooms. We arrived near midnight on the 5th. left a 5:15 AM wake-up call with the front desk so we would be ready to leave on our safari at 7:30. NO CALL. When we complained to the manager, a very incompetent Michael Muturi, he claimed that their print out showed a wake-up call for 6:30. We weren't even called at 6:30 and his excuse is that mistakes happen. No apology but that he would look into it.

On second stay: the room was not ready even though we were told that it was: garbage left in room, no bar soap [more later], shampoo, ice, or bottled water. Went to lunch. While eating lunch Mr. Muturi sat down with us. Still no explanation for problem on first stay. We covered all the problems at the room on this visit. He wrote everything down on a note pad. When we got back to the room there was water and two shampoos. STILL NO BAR SOAP. It finally took another trip to the front desk and the bar soap showed up after dinner.

We met others at some of our other stops who had the same wake-up call problems here. Fortunately for them - none of these people required the use of a wheelchair.

Over the past eleven years, we have been fortunate to travel the world many times over and I can safely say that this was one of the worst hotels that we have have ever had the misfortune to stay in. Finally, for the record, we stayed at the Mt. Kenya and Mara Safari while on this trip and they were everything that they were advertised to be: great accommodations, wheelchair accessible rooms / tents, excellent service, and great food.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else in Nairobi.

If you are in Nairobi on business and need to be in the "city" I would recommend this hotel.
This is not a hotel for a leisure traveler looking for better asthetics there are much better accomodations and prettier views in the suburbs of Nairobi (Karen/Langata).

Great price/value for your accomodations. The rooms are nice, well appointed but bathrooms are on the small side yet modern. Flat screen tv's, internet etc.

The bar is fun and always people there. Room service was good and food was pretty good.

After being in Kenya for solely pleasure there are many other beautiful hotels I would recommend outside of the city.

fabulous start to our trip. We stayed 5 nights in the old wing of the hotel. Supuerb room, fabulous decour and the staff really make this hotel. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, always a smile on their faces and always able to help. The food was fabulous although we did skip breakfast it was more expensive than it needed to be. The hotels facilities are great, enjoyed the gym and the pool and just sitting in the grounds of the hotel after a long day. Easy to walk in to town and no hassle anywhere.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the old wing rooms 9 etc

In a world of corporate, souless hotels what a relief to find a hotel with character. Fairmont have done a spectatcular job retaining the character of the hotel whilst bringing 21st century comforts to one of the grande dame hotels of Africa.

Due to the age of the building, some of the rooms are smaller than others so it is definitely worth paying the supplement for an upgraded room which isnt that much considering what you get.

There is plenty of atmosphere in the main hotel bar with screens showing the latest sports as well as a glamerous crowd in attendance of locals and residents alike maintaining the fashionable ritual of drinking at the Norfolk.

Whilst the pool didnt get much sunlight, the spa offers great value for money especially for massages and the location of the hotel makes it really accessible for all the attractions in Nairobi.

The staff were all friendly and polite and couldnt be faulted and if you are looking for a flavour of an Africa long since gone then this the only hotel to stay at in Nairobi.

Room Tip: Pay the supplement, you get what you pay for.
