“Good base to start and finish Safari”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2009

We stayed here for one night in late September 2009 and had a day room in early October.

Kuoni and The Travel Collection use this hotel as the start and finish points for their safaris.

The hotel has two restaurants, a bar, a business area and a small shop.

The rooms were clean and a decent size; on our second visit the shower was slightly more powerful, although both bathrooms could to with an upgrade.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn on the first day of our holiday before setting out on safari. We’d expected this to just be a city hotel, but found the surroundings much more spacious, with beautiful gardens and a lovely pool. The room was pleasant with all the facilities you would want. The Golden Spur Restaurant had beautiful steak, which we also enjoyed when we stopped here on our way through Nairobi after the safari. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We also found this a good base for a trip to see Karen Blixen’s house and the Giraffe Centre.

Having stayed in Holiday Inns in the UK I thought I knew what to expect, but this was a whole league above and beyond! There is a choice of two restaurants, one by the main reception and another by one of the two pools. We tried both and found the food to be very good indeed. The staff are friendly and very helpful with excellent advice on local conditions, shopping and excursions. The room was comfortable, although a bit noisy as it overlooked the main road and the terrace area outside one of the restaurants, but don't let this put you off. If you are off on safari from here they will also store your bulky luggage free of charge until you return.

Unlike other Holiday Inns I've been to, this one has character. The gardens are beautiful and a great escape from the pollution in the city. The restaurant menu was uninspiring but it's not far by taxi to city centre eateries. A relaxing place to break our journey between safari and Zanzibar. The powerful shower was much appreciated!

We stayed here on arrival from England before setting out on our safari. The room was good, the grounds beautiful, the staff very friendly and the food great. We had breakfast in the "posh" restaurant at 6.30am and it was adequate as we didn't feel like eating much anyway. We really liked the buffallo grill, which was where we ate lunch and dinner. The food was excellent.

Nairobi was interesting - but the roads! I thought traffic in London was bad enough, but this was horrendous - especially the roundabouts! There are absolutely no traffic rules at all. We visited the museum which is well worth a visit - there are so many birds. We also visited the giraffe sanctuary, where you can feed the giraffes. That is excellent. If you are going to Mobassa, however, and visiting Hallar Park, I wouldn't bother, as Hallar Park is much better.

We stayed here for a one night stopover before our safai began. We arrived at 10am and our room was ready for an early check in. Reception staff were friendly and efficient. After a recovery sleep we had lunch at the pool side restaurant where the lunchtime menu had a reasonable amount of choice. The meals were fine but basic which was why we were pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the evening buffet. The buffet was lovely and included stir fry cooked on the spot and meat (chicken, steak) cooked in front of you to your specifications. We really enjoyed this meal! Breakfast was also good with the usual buffet selection. (Other guests we spoke to ate at the steak house restaurant in the lobby and said it was excellent.).

Our room was spacious although the bathroom door was hard to shut - the shower water was not the hottest. The bed was comfortable buy the major downside with the room was that the door connecting it to the room next door was very thin. This meant that there was little sound proofing and you can hear most of what is happening next door. This was a shame as the rest of the hotel experience was good.

If you are not local then you are advised not to leave the hotel meaning I would not reccommend this hotel for more than a stopover.

My spouse and I stayed at this hotel on twice as a stop over after and before our flights. It's not far from the airport, although with traffic it can take a long time to get there. Once we arrived, we found the staff to be very welcoming and the rooms to be very comfortable. We stayed in 2 different sections, one was a bit more modern although they were both very comfortable with adequate bathrooms and soft bedding with plenty of pillows. There are no screens, but we didn't need to open windows and didn't have a problem with mosquitoes although there was a spray available in the room. There are no bed nets although other hotels do provide these at time. During a warmer time of year this might be a problem. The grounds of the hotel are filled with plants and flowers and there are 2 pools. One has a restaurant by it where they serve breakfast and other meals. The breakfast was amazing, with several stations to make pancakes or eggs to order. There was also plenty of fresh fruit as well as other warm breakfast treats. It was very professional and friendly service at breakfast. On our final stay we had a very early flight and needed to eat an hour before standard hours. We mentioned this hoping they would give us some croissants or something in the morning. They told us to just come down early and we were amazed to find a couple of others there already and the full spread already out for early risers. The property can provide for all your needs as they have some small shops and restaurants open late. They do charge a lot for bottled water, but it was nice to know that we had plenty available and that they were willing to take US $ so we didn't have to change money. If we return to Nairobi, we will stay here again and hope to have a longer stay if we do.
