“Oasis of Calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

Don't judge a book by it's cover. The interior of this sprawling hotel complex is very nicely appointed, beautiful manicured gardens and ponds, staff and professional and friendly. Two lovely pools and it appeared plenty of business amenities. Rooms are standard hotel size but very comfortable and quiet. We enjoyed a nice dinner and breakfast. Good wifi. Would recommend and stay here again. It is a true oasis of calm in what is the craziness and bustle of Nairobi.

Southern Sun is a friendly and spacious hotel but I sadly can't recommend it. At a rate of $299 per night (inc breakfast) it does not compare favourably with similar hotels in Nairobi. Rooms are OK (unless like me you are unlucky enough to have a twin room) although they lack plug sockets meaning charging anything (except on the desk IF they sockets work, one of my two didn't) means moving furniture and unplugging either lights or the TV. The floor was a slippery varnished wooden deathtrap, there was no minibar, no iron or ironing board (although after the third time of asking one of each was eventually supplied - the iron did mark one of my shirts though) and the wardrobe did not have doors - nor were there quite basic amenities such as robes. Probably the biggest let down of the stay was being situated a few feet from the bar (which is the case for quite a few rooms) where breakfast is served and fairly rowdy drinking goes on until the early hours meaning that I was woken up by poeple making a racket and kept awake by the self same. I moved out after a few nights into a much longer stay in Nairobi.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel

Really comfortable for business travel and meetings. Pleasant and courteous staff. Priced slightly higher for what it has to offer. But I will certainly recommend and stay here again on my next trip. The breakfast has sufficient vegetarian options which came as a boon for me. The landscapes and courtyard is very nicely done and gave a pleasant feeling of staying in the woods.

Though this hotel at first sight may look a bit dated, it provides excellent facilities. The check in and out were efficient. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The hotel has all the amenities required. More a business hotel than a family hotel. Location is superb. Breakfast and room service were very good and a decent variety for vegetarians also. Casino is just in the next building which is a plus.

Room Tip: choose a garden facing room

Very nice hotel in Nairobi: professional staff, lots of green despite the central location within the city, breakfast offers something for every taste and even a couple of small pools if there is time to taka it easy. Positive experience although the price was a bit high.

Room Tip: If you are light sleeper ask a room away from the restaurant and reception. The reception is not noi...

My husband, I and our friends stayed at the Mayfair on our way back from safari. We had one night and one "day room", checking out at 6pm. Thank goodness, because we couldn't wait to get out of there. The only redeeming features of the hotel were its landscaped gardens and courtyard, which was beautiful and the nice and helpful staff. Breakfast at the Oasis was also nice with lots of options.

The rooms are this hotel's downfall. I wasn't expecting the Four Seasons, but at the price we paid through our safari provider, I was expecting at least a clean, quiet and comfortable room. What we got would make Motel 6 in the US look like a luxury resort.

The Mayfair hotel gave us what must have been the crappiest rooms in the whole property. They faced the street and our "large" bed was in reality comprised of two twin beds shoved together - a fact I didn't discover until we crawled into bed late that night, exhausted. This was definitely not disclosed upon check-in. The room was tiny, it smelled and the bedside table sported a can of bug spray on it (which made me check the sheets before jumping in bed).

Even with earplugs, I couldn't sleep through the night - the loud exhaust noises of the vehicles would wake me up periodically. Our toilet flush was very picky - you had to flush "just so" and try 5-6 times before the toilet flushed. Unfortunately, at 9am the toilet completely broke down and refused to flush. As soon as housekeeping arrived, they knew immediately the toilet was broken but "had not been fixed yet". I am usually level-headed, but I hit a boiling point at that moment and demanded we be moved to the room across from us, which housekeeping indicated was available. Once we were moved to the room across the hallway, I realized that other rooms at the Mayfair were quieter, faced a beautiful courtyard (and not the street), had working toilets and normal beds. Too bad, because I'm never coming back to this hotel again.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms facing the street like the plague

Spent 1 night here on way to safari. Nice clean hotel, but a little dark for my liking. The colonial look and feel of the hotel was quite nice but the frogs in ponds were a little noisy at night. The rooms were clean and the bed was really comfortable. However, our room was on the ground floor and was quite cold and dark inside. The pool area where you eat was really nice with good choice of breakfast in a buffet style. Ate at the steakhouse in the evening which was only average. Did not get a chance to use any of the facilities so cannot comment on them.
