Owner description: The Karura Forest Reserve is an urban upland forest on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This remarkable geographical location and natural resource is one of the largest gazetted forests in the world fully within a city limits. It covers an area of about 1,000 ha (2,500 ac) and today is a shining example of how country-based corporate social responsibility and individual philanthropy can serve to secure and protect a country's natural resources. The forest offers eco-friendly opportunities for Kenyans and visitors to enjoy a leafy green respite from the hustle and bustle of the city to walk, to jog, or simply to sit quietly and experience the serenity of nature in all its diversity.

“well worth the visit”
Reviewed May 6, 2014

If you want to get away for the noise and exhaust fumes of central Nairobi on a Sunday afternoon you could do a lot worse than checking this place out. You pay a fee at the gate and have a choice of walks.

enjoy

“Beautiful”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

We love the Karura forest. We went with the kids and walked up to the water fall. Haven't seen the caves yet but its so pretty and relaxing, which is incredible since its really in the middle of the city. We have tried to rent bikes but being novice cyclists it wasn't as good as it can be (thanks to my own inability to ride a bike on an uneven road).

Its a must visit place. Perfect for families and friends.

“Better signs please ...”

.. or one ends up walking randomly without really knowing where in the forrest one is. But that is also sort of nice - the eucalyptus smell is nice and there is plenty of tress and flowers and some monkeys - so I'm not disappointed for getting lost

“Nice Easy Trek”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

Karura forest is perfect for an easy walk on the weekends. You can rent a bike for 500/- an hour although the bikes are not in the greatest condition and ours once got spoiled mid way. Still, Karura is a place we go to severally for nature walks past the waterfalls, lily lake (quite tiny for a lake) and the caves. Entrance to Karura is charged at 100/- for citizens and there is parking fees too.

“Day away from the city within the city”
Reviewed May 1, 2014

Went for a run with a group of friends. The waterfalls, bamboo forest and cool shade were all quite refreshing. A lot of history on the caves situated in the forest. Had a picnic on one of the tables set up within the forest but those monkeys....
