Owner description: The Karura Forest Reserve is an urban upland forest on the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This remarkable geographical location and natural resource is one of the largest gazetted forests in the world fully within a city limits. It covers an area of about 1,000 ha (2,500 ac) and today is a shining example of how country-based corporate social responsibility and individual philanthropy can serve to secure and protect a country's natural resources. The forest offers eco-friendly opportunities for Kenyans and visitors to enjoy a leafy green respite from the hustle and bustle of the city to walk, to jog, or simply to sit quietly and experience the serenity of nature in all its diversity.

“Pleasant and serene”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

The Kenyan Forestry Service has done a lot of work in recent years to make Karura a pleasant place. Paths are wide and well-marked. There are signs throughout and a map at the main entrance helps you find your way. We have gone with our young children and are able to find shorter trails that they can enjoy. Beware of safari ants!

“Beautiful hikes”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Great place to go for a stroll of a hike. It's a fenced park and it feels safe. There's some very nice hikes to do, also short ones to a waterfall and beautiful stream. Make sure to bring some water as it can get pretty hot!

“Enjoy nature away from the polluted city”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I just started jogging at the Karura Forest last week. It is so quiet, serene, secure, and conveniently located. The trails are clearly marked and color coded as per preferred distance (for example: 5kms is yellow, 10kms is blue, 15kms is green) and it is just so wonderful because of the fresh air, chirping birds, and monkeys jumping around every now and then. The forest is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service and therefore, there is a 100 shilling charge for Kenyans, which is not bad. If you're an outdoors person this is a great place to hike, run, and bike.
