“Great one stop souvenir shopping”
Reviewed December 25, 2011

If you find yourself in Nairobi with space in your luggage, needing a gift for the folks back home- this is the place to go.

The store is large and sells a range of crafts and products both from Kenya and from elsewhere in Africa.

The crafts vary from inexpensive beaded bracelets, necklaces and belts to fairly pricey gold jewelry and masks (most of which are from east Africa). We bought beautiful batik shoulder bags from Mombasa which we had not seen before. There were the typical carved bowls, salad tongs, etc...with prices higher than those we had seen elsewhere.

Products include Kenyan coffee in all sizes. There is a book store which sells books about the Masai and from Kenyan authors. Especially nice was a section with clothing and gifts for children- something we found hard to find in other stores.

“Great stop in Nairobi”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

Utamaduni is a very nice stop for a little shopping and a bite to eat when visiting Nairobi. The beautiful outdoor seating adds to the atmosphere, and they are able to acommodate large groups pretty well (not something easily done throughout Kenya). Shopping in the centre can take up to n hour as they have a large variety and number of products. They will ship directly to your home which is a huge plus. Overall, certainly worth a visit and a meal!

“A nice addition to a day or half-day in Karen”
Reviewed September 4, 2011

I loved this place -- as my bulging shopping bag (purchased there) proved! The building is divided into different rooms, each devoted to a certain kind of merchandise ranging from lovely African antiques, to jewelry, fabrics, clothes etc. Something for everyone! There is also a nice little restaurant on a terrace next to the front entrance, a good place for a cool drink or light meal. If you are looking for high quality souvenirs/collectibles, don't miss Utamaduni!

“Best Craft Centre in East Africa”
Reviewed July 5, 2011

Founded by Louis Leakey (which may be good or not, depends on your point of view), this is a well run craft center with fixed prices that garners the best of all crafts at one centre. We've been collecting African carvings for >30 years and these are right at the top in quality. They have a delightful restaurant with bird feeders that are extremely active with lots of bird life. My wife and I spent way too much (the big pieces they shipped home to us although it was expensive and I could not convince them to use a surface carrier or anything less than air express with insurance.....all unnecessary as far as we are concerned....it only added to the cost). Nevertheless their carvings were spectacular, fairly priced, fabrics, baskets, everything was well done and priced appropriately. A great afternoon, then we returned for a couple hours several days later. They even included several carvings we had purchased elsewhere in the box they shipped us. The box arrived today, a custom made wooden box, professionally packed, everything arrived in good shape with the exception of a US$200 carving that had a small piece knocked off. The other 9 items, including a US$580 mask, were all in good shape.
