“Sankara Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

My wife and I spent nearly eight weeks at the Sankara, from 13th May, whilst working in Kenya. It is a very modern hotel, I think about three years old, with beautifully appointed rooms. Both the guest rooms and the public areas were always beautifully clean, and the food was always excellent. Its greatest strength is its staff, from the manager down, who could not have been kinder and more attentive to our needs. The only drawback to the hotel is its lack of outdoor space for sitting and relaxing. The security was impressive in these difficult times in Kenya, but was delivered with smiles to minimise the impact on the guests. Over the long period of our stay, it progressively felt like home. There is also a desk where the staff are very helpful in organising leisure activities, such as weekend safaris.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back overlooking the gardens of the neighbouring Jacaranda hotel are nicest.

We stayed at the Sankara for 3 nights on a recent long weekend trip to Nairobi with our 2 kids (age 4 and 2) (we are currently living in Africa). The location was good near the central business district and right next door to a mall which was helpful for the food court, grocery store, etc if you need anything. The hotel itself was very nice, with a comfortable room with a nice lush king bed and nicely decorated. We had asked for 2 queen or double beds explaining that we wanted a bed for our 4 year old and one for us. When we showed up it was a room with two twin beds in it - clearly that wouldn't work. They were quick to move us to a King room without a problem and our 4 year old ended up sleeping in an additional pack and play (which came about an hour after they said it would delaying bedtime somewhat). The room did have enough space for 2 pack and plays and had a nice big bathroom with a bathtub and separate shower. The shower smelled a bit mildewy but looked clean without visible mildew. Other than that the room was great.

The service was consistently good with the exception of the delay in pack and play. They were very nice from the start, very responsive and helpful. The breakfast buffet was excellent and we were so glad to have a rate with breakfast included.

Overall a nice hotel that would be a 4 star in the U.S. This is now the second "5 star" hotel we have stayed in in Africa - both of which were like this - nice and solidly 4 star but not quite 5. Next time I might save a bit of money and stay at the City Lodge or similar class of hotel.

Dear Samantha R,

Thank you for sharing your feedback from your stay; we do appreciate your compliments about our facilities and service.

We do however apologize for the delay in delivery of the pack and play upon check in. Unfortunately we do not have the Twin Queen beds which you may have seen as a standard in the US but this is something we have put into consideration for future developments.

We are sorry to hear that you did not feel our hotel was up to five star standards. I would like to assure you that we are committed to and do benchmark ourselves to providing International five star standards in service and quality of facilities we have provided within the hotel.

We would be delighted to hear from you to understand the areas where we can improve on to meet the five star standards you are accustomed to in the US. To this end please do not hesitate to contact us on stay@sankara.com

In the meantime we do look forward to an opportunity to welcoming you back to the Sankara soon.

With Warm Regards,

Moshi Perera, General Manager.

I visited Sankara for a Business/Project party at Top Floor Pool Side. It was an awesome weather, lovely staff and great food.

Its is a swanky hotel in the heart of the city. It was the best place/restaurant in the Nairobi. Good thing is that we got the veg food easily. :)

After having the food we walked up to the Gypsies bar.

Great hotel with an staff always waiting for it's customers. Really enjoyed staying here as part of my business trip to Kenya with it's convenient location, tentative staff, and excellent accommodations. ATM is right down the street and plenty of bars for nightlife as well.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms directly under the rooftop bar/pool area as sometimes they get noisy at night.

The Sankara is a good hotel.

Things we liked:
- the rooms are very nice, clean and the wifi works well.
- the breakfast is great. the food in the restaurants is good also, but lack atmosphere in the evening.
- the staff are very helpful.

Things we didnt like:
- we stayed over a weekend and it was VERY NOISY in the corridors. We didnt complain, but in hindsight we should have.
- when you use the taxi company afiliated to the hotel, which is very professional, BUT be aware of WAITING TIME. we never asked the taxi to wait for us whilst we were at the mall and subsequently he tries to charge us for this. we of course didnt pay this, but we had to argue about it.
- once we checked out of the hotel, you cannot access the free wifi. When i requested access i was told i had to pay $8/hour for it. this is crazy for a 5* hotel.

Dear ArneOSLO,

Thank you for sharing your feedback from your most recent stay at Sankara. We do appreciate your kind words about our facilities and our staff. Please accept our apologies for the noise in the corridors which we could have addressed with the other guests concerned if we were informed. I was concerned to hear of the service received from the outsourced taxi service which we will take up with the provider.

We have just upgraded our Wi-Fi platform and now all our guests have a grace period of two hours after check out for internet use.

Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention and we are always available to assist on such matters during your stay so we can give a resolution immediately. In the meantime, we do look forward to welcoming you back again soon to the Sankara.

With Warm Regards

We stayed at the Sankara in June 2014 for 5 nights. I was with my two young children. The staff were nice and helpful. The food in the restaurants was great. But the service in the restaurant was not very good. Every meal I had to get up to find our waitress (which is tricky to do with a toddler!). The room was beautiful and very clean. The cleaning staff are good but slow, so make sure you give them at least 4 hours to clean your room. The location is nice, near a mall so you can easily walk to do shopping. The pool is really for decoration, as it is in the middle of the bar upstairs so people are eating and watching you swim, just a little uncomfortable. We didn't want to take the kids to swim because it just didn't seem like a family place. But over all we were happy with our stay.

Room Tip: Room service is somewhat slow so plan for at least an hour.
