Owner description: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Elephant Nursery in Nairobi National Park provides a safe haven to orphaned baby elephants rescued by the DSWT. The Nursery provides the first stage in the hand-rearing and development of milk dependent baby elephants. Once they graduate from the Nursery, aged 2-3 years, the elephants move to one of the DSWT's Reintegration Centres in Tsavo East National Park, from where they will ultimately return to the wild.

I had never heard of this trust but it was included in a 12 day Kenyan safari that I was on.

It was truly heartwarming to see the adorable baby elephants that they have rescued after their mothers have been killed by poachers. They raise these babies and then release them to the wild.

Babies are available for adoption for a mere $50 per year. You get email updates and pictures and can even visit your baby when you are next in Nairobi.

Great place to see and be with the elephants! A special experience. About a 6 hour drive from Nairobi...

A great experience, only open 11am -12 o'clock daily. See orphaned elephants and their minders. A very worthy cause and a must visit in Nairobi

We sent our donation to adopt an orphan elephant to the USA 501C registered tax deductible charity before we went on safari. For $50 per couple, we had a private appointment to play with the elephants as they were put to bed at 5 pm, not at noon when the hordes of tourists usually come. We were allowed to feed, pet, interact, and stay as long as we wanted even though it was stated as an hour visit. They also have orphan rhinos.

The staff are amazing, knowledgeable, and dedicated. Each orphan baby has a keeper that sleeps in the individual stable with it. They get shelter, food, love, play time, and are allowed to roam in a large area of the Nairobi National Park set aside for them. At 5 pm they return for bed and care.

It was a truly moving experience. Don't miss it.

This amazing centre is dedicated to giving baby animals, especially elephants the chance to live in the wild again, after losing their mothers in terrible ways...to poachers...in traps...by being speared etc.
The keepers are out of this world and totally committed to their baby charges 24/7 and 365. It does not get much better than to have the priviledge of watching tiny elephants, not yet at waist height, playing football with their keepers!
