Owner description: The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Elephant Nursery in Nairobi National Park provides a safe haven to orphaned baby elephants rescued by the DSWT. The Nursery provides the first stage in the hand-rearing and development of milk dependent baby elephants. Once they graduate from the Nursery, aged 2-3 years, the elephants move to one of the DSWT's Reintegration Centres in Tsavo East National Park, from where they will ultimately return to the wild.

This place is often referred to as the elephant orphange by the locals.
I just returned from my third visit to Nairobi and my third visit to this
place. This is the only so-called tourist attraction that I felt warranted
a return visit. Don't miss it!

“Amazing experience with baby elephants - truly enchanting!”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Was there with a friend who sponsors/adopted a baby elephant there and so we got to do a private visit in the evening when the babies were coming in from the park at the end of the day (around 5pm) and have to say that having a troupe of baby elephants run towards you is incredible! The keepers are so wonderful and friendly as well once you start chatting to them and the whole experience is just enchanting. Well worth a visit!

“Nice for families, but a bit uninspired.”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Sheldrick Trust got a lot of press from Nat. Geographic. They rescue elephant babies and Rhinos and attempt to re-introduce them to the wild when they are ready.
While this is an admirable and much needed conservation tool, I have to say the experience felt a bit more like a petting zoo than a wildlife sanctuary. A large group of people crowded around after paying a fairly large fee to have the young elephants trotted out to feed on display. Then there is a concession stand on the way out and the whole thing seemed more surface than substance.
That is just my impression. I would hope that the family that started and manages this trust spends their earnings on high value conservation projects that really move the needle on saving these magnificent beasts.

“Really special place”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

This is a genuine conservation and education project first and a tourist attraction second. And all the better for it. You can go here knowing you will have a wonderful time watching the orphaned elephants, who are natural entertainers, and if you are lucky, give them a scratch behind the ears, but also that by paying the entrance fee, and spreading the word, you are doing your bit. The elephants head off after this session and spend the rest of the day in the bush, learning to be elephants in the wild. There is no exploitation here.

If you decide to sponsor - you can come back for an hour in the evening to see the elephants come back and head for their stockades for the night, and spend time getting closer to them and chatting to the kind, dedicated and knowledgeable keepers.

If you do sponsor, you also get a monthly email update with loads of information, pictures and links.

It can get very hot and there is not a lot of shade - don't let that put you off though - bring water and a hat, as well as a camera, tissues, and probably wet wipes in case a muddy baby elephant just happens to brush past you....its a privilege!
