“Relaxing garden lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

This is a beautiful spot for a leisurely lunch away from the hectic pace of Nairobi. The duck spring rolls and Jade dumplings were delish! Just make sure to ask for some plum sauce.

“an excellent evening out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

Had a delightful business dinner here. Good company, good food (well presented), very good service and a quiet atmosphere, all made for an excellent evening out.

“Probably the best Asian food in Nairobi, but a little compromised”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

Asian food is a) not really that common in Nairobi, and b) generally not that good. Zen Garden is potentially an exception. It's a bit of a drive out of the main business areas, but that's not necessarily a disadvantage. As the name implies it is a rather large restaurant in a garden setting, which is pleasant and roomy, other diners are not right at your elbows as in many other popular restaurants. I was with a large group of people which gave us the opportunity to share quite a variety of dishes. Having spent a couple of decades living in Southeast Asia, most of the Thai-style dishes were quite good without being exceptionally authentic. Tasty though, and the assortment of chili sauces served on the side made it easy to add spices to individual tastes. We also tried a selection of Dim Sum style dishes, including Har Gau and Shui Mai, and they were quite reasonable, obviously not as hot and steaming as the best restaurants in Hong Kong but OK just the same. We tried Pad Thai, and the Thai Green curry, and the sashimi plus a very tasty seared tuna plate. So. The bottom line on Zen Garden is that the food is a reasonably good attempt at standard Asian dishes, presented in a fashion that resembles that much over-used word 'fusion' (i.e. large plates, modest servings). It is also priced on the high side. So if you're looking for Asian food in Nairobi, go ahead and give it a shot, this is probably about as good as it gets. On the other hand, as it did in my case, it simply whets the appetite for real Asian food in Bangkok, Hong Kong or Shanghai.

“Great Asian Fusion in a garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

I loved the food here - the service was good considering that they had a full house on a sunday afternoon. Everything was fresh and the presentation was good. Not for the budget traveller, but a good food with generous portions - be prepared to pay a bit more and you will leave there feeling satisfied.

“Good food but overpriced”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

We went for an evening meal at the Bamboo Asian fusion restaurant (there are different bits of Zen Garden open in the evening and during the day).

The food was good - we had a couple of the soups (generous helpings), spring rolls, dumplings and other starters, and then sushi and pad Thai for mains.

BUT I have to say its pretty overpriced, especially the sushi - KES 1000 and upwards for the very plainest rolls, with the platters at KES 3000! I would go to Onami in Westlands instead if you want sushi - its pricey too, but not this pricey... Even a bowl of soup here sets you back over KES 800 ($10). For Nairobi, that is expensive.

That said, the selection is good, so if you are in a larger party, which we were, almost everyone can find something on the menu they like.
