“Wonderful Outdoor Dining”
Reviewed July 3, 2010

There were twelve of us who ate at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden Restaurant a couple weeks ago. Everyone loved their food!! Also, there are nice, inexpensive gift shops on the grounds. The restaurant is set in a beautiful garden location, outside the house that Karen's manager used to live in. We had a long table on the porch, and it was so pleasant. I had some kind of fish with a curry sauce that was amazing! The restaurant has recently been taken over by Tamambo, which is a part of the same chain that owns the Carnivore. I don't know what it was like before, but it's great now. I have eaten at the other Tamambo restaurant in the past, and so I knew that it would be good. I will definitely be visiting this restaurant again!

“New Ownership, Little Improvement”
Reviewed March 10, 2010

KBCG restaurant has recently been taken over by the Tamarind Group. Given the quality of some of their other establishments, there was high hope that Tamarind would be able to improve on the dreadful cuisine that has for many years been the hallmark of Karen Blixen. Sadly it appears that, as yet, no such transformation has taken place. The service is funereal, the waiters fumbling and awkward and, out of three visits so far, the manager (if indeed there is one) has failed to make any appearance or shown any sign of interest in the diners' experiences. On the most recent visit, there was no sparkling water available. Of five main courses ordered, three had to be sent back as the orders were incorrect and one was inedible. The seafood platter appears to be the restaurant's redeeming feature; although enormous and best shared between two, the fare is delicious. Surprisingly, for a chain of its size, Tamarind's so-called "vegetarian" selection appears to consist of two paltry, unappealing dishes - far fewer in number and variety than even the Carnivore. The desserts are flavourless and stodgy. Form over function would best describe them since, although they could be given a "10" for presentation, they most certainly would be given at most a "3" for content. The restaurant ambience is muted and underlit and the music choice sombre and dull (Irish folk music, for some inexplicable reason, on the most recent occasion). The service, although gracious and friendly, is funereal and orders for such basic items as wine, coffee and bread often have to be repeated to several different wait staff several times over before satisfaction is met. A simple meal for five that was intended to be brief ended up lasting over two-and-a-half hours simply due to the speed of service and incorrect order-taking. Not good enough, Tamarind.

“Lovely garden surroundings but food ordinary”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

Food was just ordinary here but the surroundings are lovely. It is certainly worthwhile dropping in for tea or coffee following a visit to the Karen Blixen museum but dont expect gourmet food. The restaurant has changed hands so not sure if it is better or worse than before.

Personally, I think they just have too many options on the menu - have a smaller menu with better quality product and it could be great.

“What a peaceful, out of city experience!”
Reviewed June 25, 2009

A relaxing oasis to have lunch or dinner--dine in the garden or have something interesting at the Bistro. The number of locals who come here speak well for day to day service and food. I doubt there is any other place in Kenya quite like the Garden. (Oh yes, the cottages are well appointed also-great for business meetings as well as vacationers. Loved it.

“Beautiful Garden surroundings!”

Have dined at Karen Coffee Gardens many times. Beautiful setting for relaxing, enjoying an excellent menu and watching birds. My favorite spot in Kenya and the way I begin and end every trip.
