“Traditional fine-dining”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2014

The setting couldn't be more traditional- somewhat stiff atmosphere with crisp linen, hushed tones, carpeting, candle light and piano music- almost reminiscent of another era. The menu is also very traditional and we were afraid it could be a bit boring. In fact, the food was rather delicious and a flavourful surprise: from the gazpacho amuse-bouche via the crab tartare starter to a beautifully cooked red snapper fillet and a vegetarian dish of spicy vegetable dumplings accompanied by the most delicious chutney I've ever had in a restaurant, only let-down being the' over-tomatoed' bed of red lentils. The service was very professional, but in my opinion a bit too fussy and lacking that ability to make you feel at ease. There was also a bit of a mix up with our wine order- having asked for a Sauvignon Blanc from the Franschhoek Cellars, we were brought their Merlot instead. We skipped dessert in order to have a go at the cheese trolley-Kenyan varieties of Red Leicester, Gouda, Brie, Camembert, plus a blue and a fresh goat cheese- not bad but not amazing either (but they do have Carr's Table Water Biscuits and Jacobs Cream Crackers!) For coffee and digestivs we headed back to where we started out with our aperitif- the downstairs bar, which is a lovely space both indoors and outside and feels like an oasis in the middle of this bustling town.

“Great seafood in nice surroundings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2014 via mobile

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food here, especially the seafood. We had a business dinner for 8 people before heading to the airport and I would recommend it. Good selection of starters and main courses and reasonable choice of wine. The restaurant is upstairs from the main hotel restaurant at the Serena. In these difficult times from a security perspective being inside the hotel security is an additional plus.

“Seafood dinner was exceptional”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2013

I cannot recall ever having had such a wonderful seafood experience on all my worldly travels. All freshly prepared and superbly presented. Sincere thanks to Executive Chef Roy and his very capable team for making the dinner such a memorable occasion, and to Joyce and Maria (and not forgetting Louis!!) for the great company.
