Ate here three times during our stay at another hotel in the city. Despite being busy, all the staff were friendly and efficient. Oh yes, and the food was good too.

The Thorn Tree is named after the tree in its coutyard - which has messages pinned to it for people travelling around Africa - a relic of the old "post restante". Probably just a gimic in the age of sms and email, but a nice link with the past, and a bit of fun.

The service and food are great, and you can either have a full on meal or just a coffee or a drink, it's perfect, part is open air, but set back from the street, the inside part is modern, but with great prints on the walls and artefacts.

Great food - from lighter snacks to pizza's to something more substantial, and a great selection of coffees and drinks, too. Nice atmosphere as you can observe the hustle & bustle of Nairobi passing you by in this 'pavement cafe'. Perfect spot to meet friends. Don't forget to check out the famous thorn (acacia) tree planted in the middle of the restaurant - and leave a message on the noticeboard there !

The food here would have made me laugh if I hadn't already been so wanting a good meal and a decent piece of meat.
With the exception of the Sunday morning buffet, the food was just . . . silly. Not much was what it was supposed to be, and no matter how you requested your meat to be done - and they did ask you - it was all done Kenyan style - cooked well past being shoe leather.
The "brownies" are actually some overbaked nut ball thingies that you need to stab with a sharp implement in order to get a piece off to try and chew. The spinach/mushroom crepe is just that, a crepe with dry spinach and mushrooms in it, no sauce at all.
Here again the staff is good, though forget your away-from-Africa timing for delivery of food. You'll be on African time for that, so relax and enjoy it.
