Owner description: The karnak temple is one the distinguished identifying marks of Luxor in Egypt, where each of consecutive kings tried to make his temple most magnificent so as to be so distinguished than his predecessor, so the Karnak temples changed to a complete guide and collection showing the development stages of ancient Egyptian art and distinguished pharaonic architecture.

We visited both in the daytime and evening and while both offered a nice experience, we really enjoyed the evening light & sound show.

This was the first temple visited as an excursion during our Nile cruise. It didn't disappoint. Our wonderful Egyptologist guide, Abdou, brought the ancient Egyptian culture to life providing fascinating details of kings and their gods. The level of preservation of this temple is amazing, with parts of the original ceiling still intact, some still showing the colourful paint that once covered both the interior and exterior. We visited in January, 2013. Tourism had already fallen off quite dramatically, so the temple wasn't crowded. I marvelled at the intricate carvings covering virtually every surface. The entire site is about 2 square kms., so if you can, visit at a cooler time of day and allow 2-3 hours for your visit. Upon leaving the temple you have to run the usual gamut of souvenir sellers. You just have to learn to say no, because you can buy much cheaper with less hassle at the public market in Aswan.

Great building with colorful ancient history, gem of human culture. The most magnificent building I've ever seen.

if you possibly can, to avoid the midday sun, and the 100s of buses that turn up here from all over Egypt, get there as early as possible, try to get there at 8.30 or 9am, this will beat the crowd's as the buses do not normally get there until 10.30 to 11am, you will enjoy it so much more, and you will get to see most of it before the buses turn up
