Owner description: The karnak temple is one the distinguished identifying marks of Luxor in Egypt, where each of consecutive kings tried to make his temple most magnificent so as to be so distinguished than his predecessor, so the Karnak temples changed to a complete guide and collection showing the development stages of ancient Egyptian art and distinguished pharaonic architecture.

I've been teaching the Temple of Amun at Karnak for 25 years and finally got to visit. Wow. Better and BIGGER than I've ever understood! The carvings are, where they have been protected from the elements and people's destructiveness, crisp and beautiful. There are even some colors preserved.

Give it all the time you can (I made two visits) and get a GOOD guide. And demand free time to wander around. This is MUCH more interesting than the pyramids.

Wear sunscreen and carry water. I suppose you'd say there are bathrooms, but the visitor center is a good ways from the Temple proper.

I did NOT go back for the Sound and Light show in the evening.

If you to to Luxor, do not miss these ruins. While they have definitely been updated or enhanced, they are absolutely amazing.

This temple is slap bang in the middle of Luxor, close to the Nile and well worth a visit. A long avenue of Sphinx's has been uncovered in recent years and the beginning of this is close to the temple, another part is also viewable further north.

Temple of Karnak was the highlight of our trip to Luxor. It is amazingly huge, the columns were impressive and the hieroglyphics were very clear. We hired a guide which was excellent because we would have missed so many interesting little details without him. It truly is a magnificent glimpse into the time of the Ancient Egyptians.

Go early as there is very little shade and it gets very hot quite early in the day. Bring your own water from a market outside of the temple grounds.

You can not go to Luxor without spending at least half a day at the Temple of Karnak.
We did not take an organised tour but you can get a local guide who will be far better value.
