“Haven By The Nile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for one week following a cruise on the Nile. A combination of its positive reviews and its location were paramount in us choosing the Sofitel Karnak.

Located alongside the Nile on the outskirts of Karnak, away from the dust and clamour of busy Luxor, it was ideal for a spot of rest and recuperation after the early mornings and busy trips of our first week. We were still able to pop into Luxor both by taxi at a reasonable price and by the hotel’s free shuttle. The hotel provided a choice of transport minibus or boat, we chose the boat, it was excellent, about 40 minutes and we were dropped off at The Winter Palace Hotel.

The food and service were excellent and the room was quite spacious with a settee in an alcove as well all the expected items. The pool was big enough with a large area only 1.6m deep which encouraged the less able swimmers to enjoy the facility.
The only disappointing aspect was that All Inclusive guests were served small versions of the long drinks, (150ml of beer or Sprite at lunch or dinner!) necessitating more frequent service than usual.
The hotel walkways and gardens were very attractive and well maintained, with ramps for wheelchairs and pushchairs in abundance,
We would happily stay here again

Room Tip: If we stayed again we would ask for a ground floor room with garden view, but since the blocks are o...

It's good to remember that a 5 star rating in Egypt is equivalent to 4 stars in Europe...that said, the hotel was lovely, and the staff friendly but in rather short supply at times. When I went, a month ago Egypt was still recovering from its revolution, and tourist numbers were only 20% of the usual no. I expect that as time goes on this hotel will improve, as no.s of visitors rise. If you are a lone female,as I was (though not lonely), all inclusive is absolutely the only way to do it...I would not have felt safe on the streets at night looking for places to eat. Also, the guys selling tourist souvenirs can be very persistent, although not threatening, which can really be difficult to deal with.
I realise that this is turning into a review more about Egypt than the hotel.
The decor was quite impressive full of ancient Egyptian themes...a bit Disney at times. I particularly liked Carter's Bar, named after the famous archaeologist, although the air conditioning was set a bit too high. I thought my room was lovely, with a small balcony shuttered window and a domed ceiling which created a sense of extra space and coolness.
The food was perfectly edible but less special than I had hoped for from a French-run Hotel.
The best thing about the hotel was the outdoor space with large, luxuriant gardens...very colourful and exotic and the beautiful pool area. I didn't want to leave...

Booked a last minute break to this hotel. Upon arrival we were greated by warm, friendly staff and shown to our room. We had a suite which was great. I agree that the tea/coffee facilities in the room were ignored so had to grab a handful of teabags, sugar and some milk. Hotel was not particularly busy but I think that the tourist industry has taken a dramatic fall which is a shame as the staff cannot do enough for you and are always asking if everying is ok. Mohamed at the pool bar makes an effort to remember everyone's names and brings drinks over to your sunbed (what service!) There was not a lot of entertainment going on. After a couple of nights a singer appeared in the bar. Definitely will not win the X Factor but 10/10 for trying and for the laughs we all had! We only took one trip and that was to the Valley of the Kings - early start but worth it. Beware of the hassle!!! Even by the entrance to all tombs and temples is a walk-through market. Did not really venture outside the hotel but took a trip on the free hotel shuttle boat down the Nile which is worth doing. All in all the hotel was great for a peaceful break. Food was great. You can only get wine during lunch or during dinner and was not sure why it was not served in the bar after dinner. Again, if you are All Inclusive there was a slightly more limited choice on the lunch menu and different lager provided. The view across the Nile was breathtaking, especially at sunset sitting at the sundowner bar. I would definitely go back and recommend this to others.

Room Tip: Corner suites are great

We stayed 6 nights here and had also breakfast included. The aera is nice and in good condition. We had aroom with balcony, king size bed and a sofa.

The bathroom could be cleaner, it was no better than cheaphotels in this region.
The room cleaning service was terrible!
They didnt clean tables at all. The coffee making facilities are a good idea but we always ha to ask for it! If you dont ask, you dont get service and we also dont want to pay baksheesh.
Service was definitly no 5 stars!

Breakfast was okay, but we expected more from sofitel.

Shutlle to Luxor is a nice idea, but could be more often. Bus and boat are only leaving twice a day, morning and afternoon. Good idea but nothing more.

Internet was only free at the lobby and like a nightmare. Slow and often loosing connection. Writing an email took sometimes half an hour or more.

Yes, we were disappointed, we expected more.
Next time, we want go there, unless we get a really good deal.

Just got back from 2 weeks at Sofitel Karnack with my friend. We spend quite a lot of time out in Luxor as vounteers for an Animal Charity called AWOL based on the West Bank, so not your normal tourists. We know Luxor well and different hotels and this one is great to come back to after a hot dusty day out in the villages. My room was comfortable and clean. I have no complaints at all with any aspect of my stay. Staff were so friendly and the food was excellent. As a vegetarian I sometimes struggle to have lots of choice but not here. The Moulid was great and in the evening sitting in the Sundowner Bar sipping a cocktail and watching the sun set over the Nile and the Valley of the Kings is just magical. The shops at the hotel are great. They are not over priced and certainly good quality with no hassle at all. Lots of choice and an enjoyable experience chatting to Tam, or Peter or Ibrahim without feeling you are being pressured or hassled to buy unlike when out in Luxor shopping. All in all I cannot find fault at all and I shall return. Jan B.

We returned on 7th Nov after a weeks all inclusive holiday. This is the boar basis that I would recommend but we did find it a little frustrating that some drinks, especially the Stella, were served in smaller glasses for all inc guests.
We considered 5 star is slightly over rated as our room was a little tired, especially the bathroom, however the gardens and pool area more than made up for the room . We had no issues with the cleaning of our room.
Our holiday encompassed some of the school holidays but despite picking the hotel because of the mini club we did find that there was a lack of organised activities to occupy the children. That being said the children seemed more than happy with facilities that were available to them
Breakfast and Dinner is buffet style and we found the best time to eat was as the restaurant opened. Lunch is a`la carte around the pool and there is a varied selection which is freshly cooked.
There is a distinct family feel to this hotel and if it is the intention of the management and staff to create such an atmosphere then well done to you, you made us feel genuinely welcome and although it is unlikely we will return as the world is a large place we have already recommended the hotel to friends and family who are looking for a quiet relaxing holiday. Thankyou for a lovely week.
We took an organised tour to the Valley of the Kings etc which was fantastic apart from the obligatory stop at the artisans shop.....I don't believe the goods were hand made as i have seen a lot of the items in the UK. If you've visited such shops before it maybe worth avoiding. A visit to the small local farmers market in Luxor on a Tuesday is far more interesting. We never knew cabbages grew so large!
Karnak Temple is amazing and definately worth a visit and much cheaper independently
We booked our balloon trip through Viking Balloons in the hotel and whilst the local taxi drivers were quoting £25 per person plus the taxi fare but we paid £40 per adult and £20 for our son mainly because of having our 7 year old with us. At take off however an official did query our sons age and when I challenged the tour rep he advised me that 7 years was the minimum age. I found strange as our son had been playing with a 6 year old who had been on the trip with another company. I mention this as I don't feel that age laws should be abused on such a tour and would suggest that you confirm the age restrictions before you book.
