I stayed at the hotel with my wife for full two weeks and I just recommend this beautiful place.
The Egyptian hospitality is unique and we felt well taken care of. The pool is huge, plenty of staff to ensure you get a cold drink.
We spend all evenings in the various restaurants. They offer a great variety of European and Egyptian cuisine at an affordable price compared to Europe.
Don't miss the top, top breakfast buffet ! We were very surprised by the great variety and quality that the hotel offers.
Even though that the hotel is more than 100 years old, it is very well maintained and the spirit of hospitality outstanding. For sightseeing trips, ask for the guest relation ladies ( Kristeen did a great job) and the concierge. They are very efficient and have good contacts to multi lingual tour guides.

We have already booked to return in April !

Stayed the night after a 3-night Nile cruise in order to see more of Luxor/area and very glad we did! Stayed in Winter Pavilion (new) wing at advanced purchase internet special rates booked through ACCOR website 80euro/night breakfast buffet included. Room WIFI was 40LE/30 min, but lobby computer was no charge! Service, setting, location, food were all top notch/first class! Late checkout extension ('til 7 PM) cost us USD 50!

This hotel does not take the safety of its female guests seriously and will ridicule you for seeking their help from sexual harassment. The duty manager was rude and unhelpful when my sister I and I went for help after being sexually harassed by a group of young men right in front of the hotel. The duty manager said that our claim of being harassed was a personal insult to him as an Egyptian.

We spent two night at this hotel and where very positively impressed by the beauty of the building, the garden and the room. Prior to this hotel we had spent one week cruising on the outstanding Kasr Ibrim boat (Lake Nasser) and Alexander the Great (Nile). We soon found that the service at the Winter Palace was extremely slow. While we were the only clients checking in, check in took a good 30 minutes. Except at breakfast (self service) we had to wait 45-60 minutes to be served at each meal. Very suprisingly, for dinner, you are expected to book your table at 6 or 9.30 pm even though the hotel did not seem full. We insisted and could eat at more flexible hours. The food is very good and breakfast delicious. Being experienced travellers, we know that the concept of time is very variable. However it cannot explain forgotten orders, wrong orders, wrong bills, dressing arriving 20 minutes after the meal has finally landed on your table. The service at the piano bar is very efficient and nice. The pool is very nice, surrounded by sunbeds. Unfortunately, the first afternoon we did not find any available which was of course a great dispappointment. The following day we took 2 sunbeds before breakfast and were severely warned that booking sunbeds was strictly forbidden which is however the only way to have one. Internet access is free but so slow that it did not allow us to open pdf attachements. Receiving faxes was very challenging too. Staff offered to show us a nice suite and to take pictures of us (tips expected). We were caught by surprise and declined both pictures and tipping.
Sofitel means consistent quality for us in every corner of the globe and we are ready to pay the price. Unfortunately, this hotel seems to be one of the few places where there is room for improvement, whatever the local concept of time is.

This really is a quite stunning hotel; drawing rooms, lounges, gorgeous pool, really emphatically five star regarding the facilities. The service, however, is 2 star. The waiters, front desk staff, etc. are barely trained. If you go to a property like the Oberoi, where the staff all have mandatory 2 year training courses, it is night and day. Ended up feeling frustrated a) that such a wonderful old hotel was being let down by its staff and b) this is a hell of a lot of money to pay for average service.

I should say first we did not stay, but we pitched up twice at this wonderfully atmospheric place during our recent Nile cruise (on the Royal Viking if anyone is interested.) Our first visit, we had sundowners on the terrace, watching the sun slide into the mountains over the Nile behind the Valley of the Kings. Magical moment, superb service, nice measures, not madly cheap, about £12 for two of us for one round. We snuck off the boat again to have lunch in the gardens by the pool area in the Il Palmeto restaurant the next day, we just could not hack another dreadful recycled boat buffet. We had soup, fab cheese burgers and salad in an incredibly tranquil setting. Again, good service if a tad "manyana" in its delivery, and about £16 for two, no alcohol this time though. We were so impressed with the whole place my hub considered ditching our departure and checking in for a few nights...! Wish, so wish we had but at least I have extracted a promise that we will stay here sometime soon.

We have just finished our 4 day stay at the Winter Palace hotel which is a beautiful, grand old building in every way. The hotel is conveniently located and the gardens are delightful, providing an oasis to retreat and relax. The rooms are nice and clean although a little tired and old in places. What lets down the place in my view is the service and food; perhaps it is typical of the area however given its reputation and price I found it to be lacking on both counts. Staff were generally well meaning but not knowledgeable or helpful. The air-conditioning didn't work in our room (259) so it was very warm; we were also just above some generator outside which made a lot of noise and made it difficult to sleep with the windows open. When I asked the staff about the air conditioning I was told it there was only heating due to it being winter although it was cool and working in other pubic areas so that didn't make sense. Beware there is also a dress code for the fine dining restaurant and dress code for some of the lounge areas at the Winter Palace which can be nice but a bit stuffy in an old world sense. For an excellent dinner take the half hour car ride to Al Moudira - more Moroccan in style. Whilst I'd recommend the Winter Palace I would do so with a caveat.
