Review of Temple of Montu

One of the less visited sites about 30 mins drive South of Luxor. Our driver had some difficulty in finding the site, but perseverance won the day and the temple was found tucked away in the furterest reaches of the village of Tod (various spellings and pronunciations). Of the remains still visible there are some fine carvings, evidence of a sacred pool, birthing house, outdoor museum of carved stones and building materials and a nilometer. In its time the Temple of Montu at Tod was one of the largest temple sites in Egypt, the site covers a fair area and is surrounded by the local village which also once covered most ofthe site. A good visit, with not much hassle from the Temple Guardians. Facilities are available on site and there are a number of cafes situated in the new village.

I can honestly say that I was not expecting this temple to be more than a few walls and some reliefs - I was wrong. This is still a small site, but the quality of the reliefs that remain are in an excellent state of preservation. I highly recommend a visit for those people who want to see some history that is off the typical tourist route. Three of us went today using the local buses and for a little extra, the drivers were more than happy to drop us off at the entrance to the temple. The site is extremely peaceful and there were no other tourists there. The blockyard was also very interesting to walk around.
The tickets are bought from Luxor Temple ticket office

Wery peaceful place and much to see. Little difficult to find on your own, and tickets must be bought the same day in advance in the Luxor Temple ticket office. Big sicamore-tree alley is nice and unusual. Nice ruins of temple, remains of sacred lake and nilometer, procession way to Nile etc. Nice to get away from ordinary tourist routes. Visit if you´ve got time.

When we arrived we where the only people there it was truly amazing. Not only do you have the history but also on the drive in you can experience all the culture of the local village.
This temple really is worth the visit, the temple guardians where very respectful and did not hassle us as we got so used to in other sites.
