When visiting Luxor we always make a trip out to ACE to see the staff there, and the inmates, and take the goods we have been collecting since the last time we visited.
It may seem an unlikely tourist attraction, and don't worry you are not going to be subjected to horrific sights. Its a lovely centre, the staff are very welcoming, and you can read how the centre started and what they are aiming to do now. When we visited there were various donkey stabled, with either bite wounds, or sores from rubbing harness, and of course star attraction is the lovely chocolate brown baby donkey, probably now a couple of months old. You must visit, if only to see him!
They have a wish list you can view on their website, to bring out some lovely goodies for them in their effort to help all the animals in Luxor. They have some merchandise you can purchase, or if you want make a donation to this worthy cause. There is no obligation at all to do this, but it does help them.
We usually take a caleche ride out there, making sure the horse does not go too fast, certainly no more than a gentle trot, and a bit of walking along the way too. From centre of Luxor takes around 20 minutes, and you can soak up the countryside on your way there. When you arrive your horse can take a shower in the centre, and a roll in the sand pit - they really enjoy this. You can also take them out a bucket of water which will be much appreciated. Or if you prefer take a taxi. Caleche - I usually pay 120LE for the caleche there and back. Oh, I sometimes buy the caleche driver a can of Coca cola too - yes I am a softie!!
