“Worth a visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2010

This is worth a visit if not for the food then for the flamboyant decor of the wall murals. The representation of Abu Simbal is something to behold, owing more to the child-like innocence of it's painting than to any artistic talent. We had the non-veg meza which was very pleasant although a little bland. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food very reasonably priced. The table cloths however had seen better days and many a meza!

“worst restaurant in Luxor”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2009

Whilst on holiday in Luxor in september, my partner and I went to Jems restaurant for dinner and found it had a new owner. This individual has perfected the art of adding little extras to the bill, by suggesting extra dishes to compliment your order, which you think you are getting for nothing, but which find their way onto your bill.
As a bonus for us, a large brown rat appeared in the restaurant and ran over my foot before scuttling away into a corner. When we mentioned this to the owner, he readily agreed that it was a rat, but seemed to think it was quite a normal occurrence. We again stressed that it was a RAT, and waited for either an apology or a refund of our bill. Well we are still waiting!
In years gone by this restaurant was our favourite - not any more!

“Excellent Food and Service, although not a very inviting entrance.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2009

We tried this restaurant after being a little wary as the entrance is not very appealing, however, once up the stairs we were more than happy. The owner Albert greeted us and when he saw we were having difficulty selecting from the extensive menu he asked whether we would like some help. He even offered to do us a special selection, asking what meats etc. we preferred and he would tailor it to suit us. The offer of help was friendly and welcoming, in no way pushy or intrusive. What a lovely person he was, and his food matched his personality - delightful. Albert teaches in some of the 5 star hotels, what better recommendation can you get!!! We sampled some of the local egyptian dishes, however, there was a wide variety of international dishes to choose from also. The tagine and sherwarma were superb. Although normally licenced, Albert (Italian) holds great respect for his neighbours and upholds the stance of not serving alcohol during Ramadan. The bill came to a very modest 120LE for both of us.

To sum up, excellent food and service. Don't be put off by the entrance.

We ranked this restaurant about 5th in our top ten, would we return to this restaurant most definitely.

“Good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2009

Reasonable atmosphere, quite authentic, tasty food at low price (cheapest we ate in?). The down side - some other reviews mention 'frozen veg' not fresh - totaly true - but in tasty sauces. Worth a visit. We went to about 10 restaurants, this would be ranked around the middle. Was always quiet when we looked at it each day / night.

“Great food! Excellent value!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2009

'Jems' in Luxor, near the Sheraton hotel, is a little gem!! The food was excellent, service great and exceptionally good value for money! The owner is an Egyptian/Italian, who knows, and has lived in, Cornwall; he speaks English fluently. Don't be put off by having to enter the restaurant through an alley between shops - once up the stairs, you walk into a nice eating area, air conditioned, and very clean. He was most accommodating to my variances on the menu, and more than happy to please. We returned a few evenings, and will most definately revisit, on our next holiday in Luxor.
