The monastery named Deir Anba Sim'an or Monastery of Anba Hatre or Anba Hadra is one very interesting place, the early Christians lived here … maybe starting from 2nd century, maybe from 4th century, I heard both opinions. Interesting as archaeological site and historical place, it deserved 2 hours of our time, landscape is also remarkable. Do not waste your time trying to visit the new monastery (located a few steps away), the guys are totally deaf and indifferent concerning visitors coming from thousands of miles away … they do not even bother to see who’s knocking at the gate ...

You definately need a guide to try and make a sense of the Monastrey and its incredibly complex history

It's fun wandering through the many rooms of this ruined monastery and coming across ancient murals here and there. Reaching the site with our guide by camel (and then continuing on our mounts until the Tombs of the Nobles) made for a great experience. Instead of just having a camel ride for the sake of the photo album, we were actually using our camels to save ourselves a very arduous slog through desert sand in the heat.

We rode camels from our guest house to the monastery so we got to see it rise out of the heat like it was straight from a movie. The monastery is pretty interesting but we found our young guide to be too touchy in our photo ops.

For a different trip from Aswan St Simeon's Monastery is a great place to visit, peaceful, interesting and ancient, yet an unusual Christian place of interest. I walked up the track from the landing place (too old for a camel) had a look at the outside of the Aga Khan's mausoleum (not open to public) and then to monastery, very interesting and extensive, even though I had been before, with lovely views over the river to Aswan. But the young guide who showed us round did not have very good English and was difficult to understand, even though he was polite and helpful. I note the comments of other reviewers and did feel that he was a little too friendly and touched too often. Perhaps caution required if you are a younger woman.
