While visiting Aswan, be sure to visit these beautiful gardens on Kitchener's Island. We organised different mini tours over several days in Aswan by Aswan Individual, who are a company that uses locals providing services to tourists. Look them up they are on TA and are excellent.
If you wanted to fly solo so to speak then you can get a motorboat from the east bank across to Kitchener's for a small fee, you will be charged 5LE/EGP but this really should be 1-2LE. The gardens stretch from the one end of the island to the other. We even saw a Jacaranda tree, ( there are many of these trees from the town we are from in Australia). We took around 40 mins to see them but you could probably do it in less time. There are a number of cafes and kiosks there if you choose to make a day of it. I have said this on every review, expect to pay 1-2LE for toilet use and always take extra toilet paper with you.
If you wanted to make a tour of it, Aswan Individual booked a felucca captain for us. We caught a motorboat to the west bank, camel trekked the short distance to the nobles tombs ( well worth seeing) expect to pay small fee for tombs to be opened for you, then continued by camel to see the Monastery of St Simeon takes about 1 hr to look through and then camel trekked back to the river's edge where we met our felucca captain who took us to Kitchener's Island, dropped us off one end and picked us up the other, then motored around Elephantine Island, stopped for lunch at his house and a tour of the island, and we were then taken back to the east bank in the afternoon. It was a superb day!!
The same captain took us the following day this time by felucca (the first day being by his motorboat not enough wind) up the first cataract to the Old Dam and Loch and then again for lunch at his house and we went to a Nubian's house and cuddled a Nile Croc... absolutely awesome day again!! Entry to the botanical gardens is 10LE/EGP
