Owner description: This gigantic semi-finished obelisk, dating from the New Kingdom, would have weighed a staggering 1,197 tons if completed.

This was a quick but fascinating stop on our tour. It is hard to imagine how they would have removed the obelisk if it had been finished, and transported it to the river. The thing is massive. Be advised - wear shoes that are sturdy and good for climbing over rock with sand and pebbles covering them. One older member of our tour group could not make the climb up to the obelisk. It is not a far walk, but it seems that they have left the quarry as it was found. I appreciate that rather than built up for the tourists. If you look at photos of it on line, you should have an idea what you are in for. I had loose sandals on, which was not a good choice, but my 5 year old daughter and I enjoyed the visit.

I visited this years ago, in January, 1981, when I was fifteen years old. Of the attractions in the Aswan area, I liked this one the best because it was not from the Ptolomeic Period, but dated to the New Kingdom. Those facts, coupled with the fact that had this obelisk not cracked while being made, it would have been the largest one ever made.

It is really cool to see the cutting grooves on the unfinished obelisk, and one can imagine an army of artisans chipping away at the pink granite, laboriously, and endlessly.

I wonder what happened to the chief architect, when he had to inform the pharaoh of the crack.

Tripadvisor won't let me choose the actual date of my visit.

It's intersting to see the cursed Obelisk. Yes, it's big, but I liked the one standing much better.
If you have a busy schedule it's an attraction you can skip.

We really found it interesting to see the unfinished obelisk and the granite quarry, it was amazing to look at what they had carved so long ago and wonder at how frustrated they must have been when they saw the crack. One can only marvel at how they would have cut and moved such enormous stone monuments.

Yes, it is fascinating how the ancient Egyptians cut these but if it is wet or you have walking difficulties you might want to give this a miss.

Most tours visit here but generally you get too long at this site and get caught up with the hagglers at the exit while waiting for your coach. They do not give up easily, however many times you say no!
