“A must see if you like anceint temples and ruins.”

I took a Nile River cruise and this was one of the scheduled stops. If you enjoy watchng The Learning Channel, The Discovery Channel and The History Channel, then you will love all of the temples and ruins like this in Egypt. There is so much history scattered throughout the country. Try to schedule your visit in the Fall or in the Spring due to Egypt's climate. I would suggest you hiring your own tour guide to show you around.

“Must see in Aswan, Egypt- Amalgamation of cultures in an island on the Nile”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Temple of philae is a definite must see. Even the boat ride to the temple is exciting. One can see the view of the houses in different colors on the hill as the boat moves away from the shore towards the temple. As we approach the temple, it is seen from different angles which makes for a great photo shoot on a sunny day. The location has good deal of shade for weary travellers. There were very few vendors but none at the site of the temple. They are all situated at the area where we board the boat, so they will not bother during the temple visit. Although their numbers are few due to poor tourism currently.

I was told by the egyptologist that usually there are 100s of people visiting the temple. Unfortunately since the first revolution the number of visitors has been very low. For us, it was a good time to visit as we had a great experience.

History and architecture: I saw the evidence of maltese crosses near the entrance doors of the temple- a sign left by the coptic christians during their first inhabitation. Some graffiti in arabic left by muslim rulers. The basic structure has pharonic era hieroglyphics and architecture. In the back of the temple there is an area of the temple with greko-roman architecture in ruins. Overall, the temple is a mixture of all that Egypt has seen and been through the ages. The site is very intriguing due to the mixture of cultures and the varied architecture. The highlight, of course, is the fact that it is on an island in the Nile river.

Bottomline: It is a temple which should be seen by all. If you dont have time, make time. Its worth it!!

“Amazing Temple (will easily Philae few hours!)”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

This temple was saved from being flooded by a huge UNESCO project, which saw the temple relocated brick by brick, column by column from its original location, and it was SO worth saving.

The details in the main temple area are stunning, the carvings so clear, but it also features some interesting drawings, various examples of 'graffiti' (by the ancient civilisations, not modern tourists) and the boat trip there is also very pleasurable.

Highly recommended and enough to see to Philae few hours (bad pun intended!).

“A SUCCEFUL STORY OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is one of the most beautiful pharonic temples left to us by this great old and prehistoric civilisation.Formerly it was situated in a location that was going to bo totally flooded and drowened by water after finishing the giant project of the HIGH DAM 14 kilometers south to the city of ASWAN .But thanks to UNESCO of the united nations organisation , a jiant project was planned to cut this temple into pieces ,then transferring and reconstructing it on PHILAE island between the high dam and aswan dam, thus saving this unrepeatable and uncompensatable monument. There is a sound and light show in different languages on selected days, so don't miss it
