We stayed one night in the Movenpick in Aswan. Our experience was mixed. First of all it is a huge sprawling hotel. The lounge and lobby are rather impersonal. Our room was very good with a balcony and Nile view and facing away from the noise from the city. The Tower bar is sensational with excellent views and a great place to have a pre-dinner drink. The pool area is also superb with a very nice poolside restaurant for lunch.
The biggest disappointment was the main restaurant in the evening (there is supposed to be an Italian restaurant but that was closed, also the pool restaurant had a private party that night). The main restaurant is a cavernous soulless place - more like a motorway service station. We found the buffet was rather poor and the staff less than enthusiastic.
One other point to beware - there is the shell of an abandoned unfinished hotel on the island right next to the Movenpick which looks dreadful. Rooms that look out onto that would have an otherwise pleasant view ruined.
All in all, our impression was of a 5 star resort struggling to deliver 5 star service.More
