I loved this place. The hotel is clean and modern and luxurious. The rooms are a good size and have a large balcony.

The hotel/resort is set on Elephantine Island. You have to take a (free) hotel boat that ferries you from the hotel to the city and back. I never had to wait more than a few minutes - I thought this might be a bit annoying, but it is great to be able to get away from the city and get a free boat trip on the Nile a few times a day (if you want of course).

The setting of the pool is wonderful. You have beautiful views of the Nile and the city.

Breakfast was amazing. A huge variety of options (plus many things for vegetarians). From falafel and fuul to eggs made to order to fruit and cereal to veggies and cheeses.

There is a restaurant on the 13th floor that is delicious and has amazing views. Head there for a sunset drink. (though it would be great if they got the spots off the windows up there - it ruins the photos)

There are tourists shops, a travel agent, massages, bars, hookah/nargileh/shisha - all on site.

Also - be sure to exit the resort and wander through the Nubian villages on the island. A definite highlight of Aswan. The residents are super friendly and you can walk to the end of the island in 20 minutes.

The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Negatives - No free wifi, and no paid wifi in the room. There is paid wifi in the lobby area, which you can use through your own devices or else they have 2 computers you can use. Another negative is the fact that the main architectural feature of the hotel is the tower - which is HUGE - and makes the hotel look like an airport. Also - the hotel is not exactly fitting into the local scene, and thus can be described as an eyesore that forever altered Elephantine Island (but as with most tourist development, there will be environmental consequences).

Note: I normally never stay in luxury hotels, but was able to due to the lack of tourists in Egypt and the huge discounts hotels are offering. If you have yet to go to Egypt, now is the chance to go when the sites are free of tourists and everything is very cheap. And while you have to weigh the costs of supporting a dictatorship, remember most people had no problems visiting Mubarek's Egypt - and more importantly, so many people rely on tourism for their livelihood, that any tourism activity is going to make a huge difference to people.

Like most of Egypt in the summer of 2014, this hotel had very few guests when I stayed there, so this is some context for my stay. I also usually only stay at 5 star hotels when there is a great bargain, so I don't have many 5 star hotels to compare it to (though I liked this place notably more than the famous Winter Palace in Luxor). In short, I liked it a lot and wished I could stay longer than the 2 nights I did!

Pros: Very spacious property on a peaceful island (great for taking walks into the Nubian village on the island)
Delicious buffet with ample options, especially for vegetarians.
Nicely designed rooms, some of which have great views of the Nile.
Helpful staff (though admittedly I seldom asked them for anything).
Great for watching sporting events (with reasonably priced hookah) - they set up a TV screen outside to watch World Cup games when I was there.
Great pool (esp. the setting)
Great and reasonably priced on-site massages available.
Excellent restaurant on the top floor with great panoramic views.

Cons: You have to pay for wi-fi, and only available in the lobby.
You have to take a boat to and from the island to get to Aswan (but it's free and runs quite regularly).
Ethical issues with how the hotel was initially created (with a Soviet-esque airport tower being its signature, and out of place, architectural feature).

Room Tip: Until things settle down in Egypt, I suspect there will be no shortage of great rooms from which you can have your pick.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights. I think there were only about 20 guests so it was very quiet. I found the hotel to be very outdated. Not a five star hotel in any way! Everything is very old and run down even the decor. They did not offer free wifi and if you purchased a card it could only be used in lobby or the tower, not in your room! The ferry ride was great, it ran all hours and was free. The location is amazing though! The view from the tower cannot be beaten. You see the Nile on both sides, the city of Aswan, and then beautiful sand dunes that tower like mountains! That is worth the view. The pool was fantastic too! Quite large and very well maintained. The breakfast buffet was nice with a great selection. The gardens and outdoor landscape is so beautiful! Great location as I said earlier but the hotel is just ok.

Located on Elephantine Island in the middle of the Nile ensures quiet surroundings - although this may change when the hotel next door is finished.
Rooms clean and comfortable - large with fantastic Nile views.
Breakfasts buffet style and varied, whilst the restaurant was at the top of the tower and had a great view of Aswan and surrounds.
Ferry runs 24x7 to the town
Pool large but with little shade which is needed in a hot climate
Staff very willing to do anything to make your stay better

Generally a good all-rounder, as expected from an international chain, albeit a tad impersonal and aseptized. Unfortunately this hotel was built without consulting the Unesco nor the local fishermen living on the island. The end-result speaks for itself, from such a distance and so conspicuously that it's been nicknamed "the Control Tower". Meanwhile the villagers have been parked and fenced away from this piece of ostentation on their land.
Of course this has nothing to do with the staff running the hotel now, who try their best to accomodate their clients" whims and critics.
My main critic concerns the arguable architecture and lack of initial concertation.
