The Old Cataract hotel is one of the top hotels on earth, with a lot of history on an exclusive location. Its personel is excellent and the service top level, as if we were the only guests (which we were not!). Of course, you pay for this... but every eurocent, dime or Egyptian pound was well spent. If you can afford it, take one of the suites in the palace with Nile view! And go and eat in the '1902' restaurant (we had an exquisite two course meal with Egyptian wine and Italian water for only 50 EUR per person), or at least go and look in the marvelous place. [ The so called 'exclusive' dinner at Fouads Corner was the only activity that did not comply with what we had expected as the waiters were not trained to serve food. ] We hope return as soon as Egypt is on the list again. The current period (March 2013) is excellent to visit the country: the amount of visitors at the monuments is equal to those in 1902! All went safe and quiet... Cairo is 800 km north...

Stayed in this outstanding hotel 3 days in February, father and 3 kids. The hotel is absolutely in top top class. Beautiful hotel, stylish, fantasctic location, great atmosphere, elegant, eminent view from our room, great facilities, and no to forget, the most helpfull, pleasant and professional staff. The staff is ready to help you at any time or just have a friendly conversation. But they keep a very fine balance, and will leave you on your own, if thats what you prefer. Ofcourse worthwhile to visit Aswan for other matters, whether tourism or business, but actually it is worthwile alone a trip to Aswan just to stay in this beautiful hotel. It is expensive, but one gets value for money. It is not too expensive, because it is worth it, it is rather a question on whether you want to spend the money.

We arrived late on our first night in Egypt and so only saw the hotel in the dark. We had a suite of room in the new part of the hotel which were very large with bedroom, patio, bathroom, dressing area. The next day we had breakfast outside mainly with japanese over looking the Nile. The service was attentive. We also had massages in the spa which were expensive but in my case my hot stone massage was well worth the price. The swimming pool outside was shut for refurbishment but we could have used the one at the Movenpick hotel with a free transfer. The best part of the stay was drinks on the terrace overlooking the Nile. We also had dinner with guests using the terrace menu but eating inside which was very pleasant. The new part of the hotel is very elegant and the decor tasteful. It was a very calm place to start our Egyptian trip.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor of the new part of the hotel which was quiet.

Beautiful hotel in the best location in Aswan. The surrounding area is quite spectacular and you feel privileged to be staying at the Cataract.

The decor of all areas in the hotel is tasteful and in keeping with the buildings history, the photos we took inside did not do it justice so I've not posted them here.

Service was excellent with all staff very polite and eager to please guests.

We stayed B&B and the breakfasts were delicious and set you up for the day, eaten on the Terrace it was a wonderful way to start the day. N.B. if you don't eat breakfast in the hotel I'm not sure where else you'd go nearby!

We ate dinner at 3 restaurants in the hotel; 1902, The Terrace and Oriental (local food). All were very good and the splendour of your surroundings whilst in 1902 is worth the premium price.

We hired a felucca from the jetty at the hotel and it was a wonderful experience, well worth approx £10 an hour, arrange it directly with the boats captain and not the hotel.

The hotel had only 10% occupancy whilst we were there which is a shame because it deserves more guests, never the less we met some very interesting people.

A stay at the Cataract is expensive, but not excessively so, and is good value for money.

Room Tip: The new Nile wing rooms are a very high standard with the added bonus you have a view of the old hotel building and not the Nile wing!
