We stayed for one night post-cruise at the end of November.

We were disappointed in the tiny room we were given (supposedly an upgrade), but still pleased that they were able to give us a room at 11:00 AM. We had dinner two nights (went off the boat the night before) in the 1902 restaurant, which is a very impressive setting and has excellent food.

I would write more, but it won't be relevant unless you plan to be there before the end of March. We were told that the hotel is closing early April for a two-year renovation. While the setting is gorgeous, and the terraces and pool area lovely, the interior does need significant renovation. Guests were trapped in the elevator, carpeting is frayed and cut and patched, and hundreds of coats of paint are flaking off the walls. Still, it is a lovely, charming hotel and I hope the renovation will bring back its grandeur.

The Old Cataract is an old hotel. It delivers an old world luxury experience even tho' it is a Sofitel. In Aswan there will be vagaries of water supply etc. and one has to have a bit of understanding here. The rooms vary from tiny to huge and acceptable to wow! The Nile views from the terrace and from some of the rooms are super. Our room was huge, furnished with period pieces and comfortable tho not luxurious by modern standards. The bathroom was huge and functional. The room had an old TV which I don't think we ever turned on. We didn't use the pool facilities. Lunch overlooking the Nile was super. The food in the hotel was fine. We had two dinners in the 1902 which is a period piece with wonderful ambience. The food in there was prettily presented but not particularly tasty. I would definitely stay there again, the view can't be beat and the facility is fine.

What a wonderful old hotel suituated on the banks of the Nile. We were upgraded to a suite which made the adventure even better. Contact me if you want more. Better still, go!

After reading the reviews on Tripavisor, my expectations were probably a little too high.

On the positive:
Building is very nice, location fantastic, the terrace magnificent.
The rooms were very large, even the standard rooms, though they felt a little cold and spiritless.

On the negative:
The service was in general not attentive and in particular in the restaurant and terrace incredibly slow and forgetful. We constantly felt that we have to be greatful to stay in this magnificent place (which we were considering it is the best house in town)

The food in the 'glamorous' restaurant was simply put awful and disappointing. To make matters worse, not only was it not good, 2 hours after the dinner, 2 of our party were suffering from diarrea.

I still give the place 4 stars since the hotel is not in a downtown western city but in a remote Egyptian city where one simply cannot expect perfection, however the hotel management should take some courses in customer servicing and teach the inexperienced staff.

Just returned from a really wonderful holiday that finished with three nights in this beautiful old hotel. The rooms were huge the decor superb just as we expected from this old palace! Other people have complained about the plumbing ..we had plenty of hot water as and when we wanted it,Our biggest complaint was the very very slow service and luke warm food. The staff we felt were overworked. The views from the terrace are really wonderful and just sitting there watching the nile is amazing.I can only write about our experience...it was a very luxurious ending to a wonderful holiday.
