We are just back from Aswan where we stayed at Bet el kerem for the second time (1st time was in Feb 2011!!) and we still love it. The location is great, the staff is helpful, the rooftop is so relaxing and the food is excellent. Bet el kerem is really a home away from home and Abdullah is really a great owner who can arrange all sorts of trips and tell you everything about Nubia!! Just great!!!

We had an absolutely fantastic stay with Abdullah and his staff at Bet el Kerem. From our arrival & greeting with hibiscus tea, to help organising a trip to Abu Simbel, to the delicious meal we ate on our first night, this place is the complete package. Indeed, our only regret is that we only stayed two nights!

We had a lovely double room on the mid level of the hotel, with two bathrooms at our easy disposal. Arriving late, Abdullah (the owner) had his chef prepare us some fish that he had gone to collect from the village for dinner, and it was a feast! The hospitality that was shown to us was incredible, including a huge breakfast box for us to take to Abu Simbel (which was much appreciated after the 2.45am departure!)

The hotel is on Aswan's West Bank, in a small Nubian village. There is a public ferry from Aswan's corniche (about 5 mins walk from the station), which costs LE1 each way (don't let them charge you LE5; have the correct change ready and if they argue just put down your pounds, smile and say something like 'I know it's only one...'). Bet el Karem is about 5 mins walk up a dirt track - everyone knows where it is, and they won't expect baksheesh for helping you find the way. It is a flat walk & absolutely no problems at any time of day or night.

We found it so lovely to be able to escape to the small village from Aswan's main town area, which is really quite busy. You will be plied with tea and food by Abdullah (we shared his lunch with him on the afternoon of our departure!) and felt rude saying no!

We were initially concerned when in Luxor we heard that it may be hard to organise an Abu Simbel trip from Aswan's West Bank, but in the end it was very easy - as other travellers have said, Abdullah organised us a boat at 3am and a minibus connection on the other side.

Overall we can't recommend Bet el Karem highly enough. We're told the name translates to 'House of Hospitality' and it certainly lives up to that!

Bet El Kerem was a highlight of our holiday in Egypt: situated on Aswan's West Bank, the location is fabulous. It's well away from the hustle & bustle of Aswan & the cruise ships, with an amazing roof terrace overlooking the Nile, the Nubian village in which it is situated, the Tombs of the Nobles and the desert. Though the guest rooms are simple [but comfortable enough], the roof terrace is a great place to chill out: the Nubian men who run the place quietly go about their business up there, cooking wonderful meals for you if you wish, offering [complimentary] cups of tea / coffee etc as soon as you arrive, organising trips and activities [eg boat trips, camel rides etc]. When the work is finished, they'll sit and chat to you. The food is great: simple, fresh, Nubian in style. The village is also a great place to get to know, and the local people exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
You have to cross the Nile to go anywhere, and there is a cheap local ferry [1EGP, about 10 pence], but you need to feel OK about bartering the price [they'll try to charge you much more] and not mind a short [300 metre?] hike up a dusty track to the guesthouse. It wouldn't suit anyone with mobility problems.
It's probably a little on the expensive side in terms of the level of luxury, but we thought it was well worth it for the experience of staying in such a fabulous location, in the heart of a Nubian village, and the Nubian hospitality was a really welcoming experience, which we'll treasure.

I stayed here with Millie (review below). The staff are very welcoming and Adbulla was so helpful. He organised our trip to Abu Simbel and our Felucca from Aswan to Kom Ombo. Even after we left the hostel he called our Felucca captain the next day who passed the phone on to us to ask how we were finding the trip. He really did everything to make sure we had a great time in Egypt. The Felucca trip was one of the most incredible things I've done travelling. Captain Hamada piloted us expertly up the Nile for 3 days while we swam in the Nile and visited some beautiful sites. He even sailed up to a local Nile fisherman one morning and bought us lunch which our cook prepared straight away. The Nubian people we met in Egypt were so friendly.

I booked Bet El Kerem based on its reviews and it didn't disappoint. It is on the west bank away from the noise of Aswan and in a quiet nubian village but the only a short ferry from Aswan itself. The staff are wonderful and Abdulla arranged a great felucca trip up past Kom Ombo with Hamada and a day trip to Abu Simbel. We only stayed one night but I would love to stay much longer.
Thank you for looking after us.
