One needs to remember how old these things are and that any remains is incredible. Located near the step pyramid in the Saqqara desert one has to use some imagination to wonder what it was like in its heyday. Although there is not a lot left, the polished columns give us some idea of what it must have been like. Around this area there was some preoccupation with building underground as you will see from some of the pits. I believe that there are a couple of miles of tunnels under the step pyramid.
