We had a 10-hour layover in Cairo on our trip to Africa, and we were thrilled to spend the time visiting the pyramids and sphinx. We visited on a Friday, so there little traffic.

It has been a life-long dream of mine to visit the pyramids, and being there in person was absolutely amazing. I was nervous about going there after reading so many stories of visitors getting accosted by vendors. We never experienced this. Maybe 2 or 3 vendors approached us but quickly left when we weren't interested.

There is nothing quite like seeing the pyramids in person, and having the opportunity to walk all around them and even climb inside one was the experience of a lifetime. We drove out to the lookout for a camel ride at the end of our time at the pyramids, and the late afternoon light on the pyramids was breath-taking.

This was the best layover ever!!

These are the dreams of everyone to see. Kids loved it. Its not worth going inside the Pyramid, its just a stair going to the top. The beauty lies in watching them from the Panoramic view.

I dreamt about the visit of pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the only wonder of the ancient world still in existence and it's definitely one of the oldest must-see structures on Earth! Yes, there're too many sellers and hawkers around. They distracting you, trying to push something all the time but you have no choice. That's how it is. But if you really want to see the pyramids I think it won't stop you and it didn't stop us. Just try to choose the better time for a visit - go there in the morning when it's not to crowdy and not many locals are there.

Got to see it was amazing, You have to go inside if you go see the pyramids, its tight once you get in, but its worth it. I can't tell you how I felt after getting to the tomb area, it was amazing.

My husband and I visited the Great Pyramids of Giza end of November 2012. It was a perfect time to go, because it was just the start of their winter, which means the days won't get hotter than 35 degrees or so in the desert. It is one of those things that was always on my bucket list and it didn't disappoint! It is so old and big ... we stared for hours, and the best thing is that you can touch the almost 5000 year old stones.
Do not be put off by people saying it is not a good experience because of the hagglers. Here are a few tips about how to handle them:
1. Go on a weekday when it is not so busy and also very early morning before the main tourist buses come. Be there when they open.
2. After you bought your ticket (make sure it is for pyramids and Sphinx), count the change they give you. They tend to hold some back.
3. We went on our own without a tour group. This was perfect for us, because we could marvel at the ancient wonders in our own time. People said that they harrass "loners" more than groups, but I actually did not find this to be the case.
4. When they ask you for a camel ride or to buy something, they will stay with you (even though you have said "no") if you are not firm about it. I have learnt to say "No thank you" in their language, which is "La shukran", and they respect your decision more if you say it in their language. It shows you know more than just the average traveler, so they usually left us alone after that. Also be very firm without being outright rude.
5. DON'T do a camel ride with anyone! They don't look after the animals well and also want more than you bargained for afterwards. We went on a one hour sunset camel ride with FB Stables in the desert where you can still see the pyramids in the background...it was wonderful.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so don't be put off by anything and just enjoy this wonder!
