Owner description: At over 240 feet long and 66 feet high, it’s a wonder that this mysterious sculpture was carved from a solid limestone block.

We made a fairly early start, enabling us to view the Pyramid and the Sphynx in peace. It was lovely to be able to stand quietly, taking it all in, breathing in the history without the crush of other tourists and the annoyance of persistent vendors. We visited again in the evening to see the light and sound show which was stunning. Once again, there were very few visitors at our showing.

You cannot visit the Pyramids without visiting the Sphinx. Try to visit in the morning as the afternoon sun can interfere with taking photos. you can take photos with the Pyramids in the background.

The Sphinx is an iconic statue that stands guard over the pyramids at Giza. It is an amazing structure, even missing part of the nose. Again, the age of the sphinx is amazing. The only dislike I had was the abundance of vendors trying to sell you everything. They were pushy, but under the circumstances, with virtually no tourism to speak of these people are desparate to try and make a living.

After watching the Sphinx on many documentaries and seeing many images, seeing it in person was amazing, the scale and location are a must see, add to your bucket list if it isn't already there.

The short walk down to the Sphinx sets the context for the pyramids. It is from here that you you can see antiquity in its entirety: the soul in the face with the bodily strength of a lion for protection and it all begins to make sense when you see it in it's real setting. It is here that I realised the beauty in this sculpture and while thinking about how it was constructed, I could understand why it is a major 'wonder of the world'.
