“Staying for One Night for A Conference”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

I stayed for one night while attending a conference. The wi-fi was dead slow, I had to use my BB to log on the internet. The room corner lamp was not working, I called HK three times to get someone to fix it and nobody showed up. The greatest thing with this hotel is its location,

In a city where almost everyone wants to make a quick dollar of you, The Safir Hotel in Giza, Cairo was a wonderful exception. My 2 adult children and I arrived in Cairo at 5 on Christmas morning and upon arriving at our hotel, the front desk arranged for us to have our room within an hour. The room was clean and comfortable with all the usual items. The foyer had beautiful fresh flowers daily.
The staff was wonderful. Everyone was warm, helpful and friendly. A special mention must be made of our Doorman who went the extra mile to assist us. The hotel is well situated in a good neighborhood which allowed us to walk around safely.
Breakfast was great and the staff tried really hard to meet our needs. Free wifi in the foyer, breakfast room and coffee shop was an added bonus and very welcome.
A wonderfully hospitable hotel which will always be remembered for its friendly staff and great service.

Nice and clean hotel. Plentyful and nice cold and hot bufet dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also a cafe with free Wifi, a sushi restaurant, a grill restaurant and an oriental a la carte restaurant.
Two little shops for souvenirs, an ATM and a bank for currency exchange.
Minibar with soft drinks, snacks and two bottles of water replenish dairy.
Clean towels twice a day if needed.
An outdoors heated small swiming pool, sauna and spa (which we didn't use).
Ask for a room with a pool view (less noisy).
Close to Dokki metro station and 1/2h walking to the Cairo Museum.
There is a desk in the lobby for tours and transfers, but it is very expensive. I recomend to book your tours with somebody else.
This hotel is used mainly by business people and weddings on Friday.

Room Tip: Rooms with pool view are quieter.

The hotel is comfortable in general, especially for its price point. My standard room was adequately furnished with the comforts you expect of a "five star" hotel - 32 inch LCD TV, toiletries and a safe that is large enough to fit a 13 inch laptop. There's also an on-site money changer with good rates. The breakfast spread was wide, but it didn't taste phenomenal. Anyway, one really can't complain since most other 5 star hotels in Cairo would charge you at 30 to 50 percent more for a room with breakfast.

I had dinner at two of the restaurants during my stay. The food at the Asia Boutique Restaurant left me wanting; the Thai curry and sushi are sub par and you can easily find better in Zamalek. The seafood pizza at the chit chat cafe was huge and was quite good. There's even a singer there in the evening for guests to unwind with a shisha pipe.

Some things to note:

Wifi is not included in the room rate and is charged at 150 EGP (over 20 USD). They offer free wifi in the lobby and lounge on the ground floor. If you can't do without a stable Internet connection (like me), just head down to the vodafone or mobinil store - a five minute walk from the hotel. A 6gb data plan with SIM card will cost you 168 EGP and is valid for a month. There are other plans available as well. Remember to bring your passport along to facilitate the application.

Never take any of the taxis waiting right outside of the hotel. These drivers don't use the meter and will charge you two to four times the actual cost of the journey. Just ignore them if they call out to you. Walk out to the main road (turn left as you exit the hotel) and hail a cab from there.

There was a blackout (power trip) in my room one evening. It took me an hour and a half to get the problem resolved. The electrician only came after two calls and a visit to the reception. Lesson learnt: Head to the reception if you want something done urgently.

The carpets in the room were dirty (lots of stain marks), so bring a pair of flip flops if you're hygiene conscious.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor. Egyptian drivers love using their horn.

I have stayed with my husband in Safir El Dokki in October 2012 for 3 nights. The hotel is located in a good area in a residential neighbourhood, but on a main street. It's easy to find and close to everything in the city. About 10 - 15 minutes driving to the Egyptian Museum and about 20 - 30 mins to the Pyramids (without the regular Cairo traffic of course). Our room was an okay average size, not too big or too small, was overlooking the main street, had a small balcony, a comfortable double bed, a flat screen TV, mini bar, bathroom amenities (robes, etc) and a safe. The room is VERY clean, but of course as we asked for a smoking room, it did smell of smoke as is the norm with smoking rooms in any hotel you go to anywhere in the world. We used the pool a couple of times which has its own bar. The only problem with the pool is that it's overlooked by residential buildings around, but I guess the residents are used to seeing people by the pool all the time. Close by are a few restaurants, supermarket, and a Mobinil vendor. The staff are quite friendly and answered all of our questions whenever we had any. There are a few shops in the hotel, we went in and had a look but didn't buy anything. You'll find the breakfast buffet quite good with hot and cold food and a smoking area for those wishing to have a ciggie after breakfast. All in all, a pleasant stay at Safir El Dokki and I will not be considering other hotels in Cairo after finding this little gem. A great hotel for short trips in Cairo and business trips on the go. Looking forward to the next time I stay there :)

Room Tip: Egypt has two hole adapters. Make sure you pack your own.

I thought an address of Giza meant you were out near the pyramids. Wrong. Giza is the west side of the Nile and Cairo is the east side of the Nile. Given that Cairo is a very large city and so most places require taxi travel the location is as good as the Cairo side of the Nile.
We wanted an Egyptian hotel rather than an International style hotel. We were delighted with our choice. Room was large and very comfortable. Food excellent, both eastern and western and service first class. Breakfast buffet was superb.

Safir Hotel provided a comfortable stay in the Dokki neighborhood. In email correspondences they were very prompt and informative. They arranged our airport travel through their on-site agency. A driver was waiting for us with a sign upon our arrival. The premises are huge, a café with free wireless for guests, and other restaurants, a spa, on-site gift shop, etc. The room was quite spacious and provided a view of their pool. The breakfast buffet was comprehensive! There are two different rooms: one for cold buffet, and the other for the hot buffet foods, including an omelet and fresh tafia (similar to falafel) stations. They had breads, pastries, hummus, babaganoush, lots of vegetables, eggs, etc. A 5-10 minute walk away is the subway stop, with easy access to main Cairo sites like Tahrir Square, the Egyptian museum, and the famous restaurant, Felfala. The lobby areas are beautifully decorated. We even got to experience a slice of Cairo life as there was a wedding going on upon our arrival. The wedding was noisy in the lobby, but the hotel is so large, that it was completely quiet in our room. I definitely recommend staying at Safir Hotel in Cairo.
