“Oasis in Cairo”
Reviewed January 6, 2010

I have read some of the complaints for Oasis being about the distance from down town Cairo however I felt this was a godsend as the pollution and noise levels in this city are phenomenal. After spending the day in Cairo it was welcome relief to get back to the hotel away from all that. There is the free shuttle bus service which we used. Granted they don't run at necessarily convenient or regular times but we just adjusted our itinerary to cope. The other option was to haggle a taxi back. We did encounter a persistent taxi driver who didn't have a clue where our hotel was and didn't know the name of the road as we said it in English, but tried to get more money to take us (where we don't know). We promptly got out of that taxi and instead went for dinner and waited for the late shuttle bus back. (tip - take a business card form the Oasis reception as it has the hotel name and address details written in Arabic which you can show the driver.)
Our room was very spacious and comfortable and the aircon worked very well during the heat of the day, and the heating was great when the temperature dropped in the evening.
Being December and a bit colder we didn't make use of the pool however we did enjoy lounging on the sunbeds around it, though it was a case of chasing the sun in the afternoon and changing beds as the sun moved. We also enjoyed the massage options available as a final relaxation ploy before returning home.
We only ate at the Italian restaurant in the hotel once as we ate in down town Cairo the rest of the time. The food in this restaurant was generally good and reasonably priced.
The breakfasts however were plentiful, with lots of options, including a 'diet corner'. If you are near a supermarket or small shop selling water stock up as it can be pricey at the hotel.
Overall the staff were very friendly, the service and the accommodations were great.

We went to Cairo in December- which was unexpectedly cold. The Oasis hotel is not near to anything in Cairo and you cannot walk anywhere. We had to ask our guide to take us to a shop to go and buy water (you cannot drink the tap water). There wasn't enough towels in our room and the room was very cramped and uncomfortable. Breakfast though was great. The hotel also have a restaurant which we enjoyed the one time we dined there.Like all hotels in Egypt, regretably this room also did not have coffee and tea making facilities.

The hotel is close to the Pyramids in Giza, but too far away from everything else - not a great location if you plan to stay in Cairo for more than a day or two. The hotel is spread out over 4-5 acres and consists of rowhouses. The rooms are fairly large and clean, the beds are comfortable, but the hotel's layout means that you face a really long walk in the freezing cold after check-in.

The breakfast spread is standard Egyptian fare and is quite average. The service in quite good in general. We didn't get a chance to try the restaurant, but room service did not inspire much confidence

We stayed here for 3 nights in late December. The hotel is 3 stars at best, not 5 by American standards. The gardens are beautiful but the rooms are average and the tv was black-white. Only 1 outlet worked in the room so to charge phones/laptop/ cameras we had to turn off the tv, since the outlets in the toilet are in the ceiling.
The buffet breakfast was nothing special. Staff never smiles unless you tip them.
The hotel is on a very busy road, close to the pyramids, but it still took us 45 min to get to the lightshow, it's so congested.

On the plus side: rooms are a decent size and comfortable; there is an excellent gym and decent pool; there is a reasonable choice of eateries (although if you're not on the fullboard option, don't eat in the main restaurant a la carte - the staff are only geared up for the fixed menu, so we waited half an hour for food and even longer to get our hands on a bottle of wine [maybe they disapproved?]).

On the minus side: location, location, location. It is not possible to go anywhere under your own steam, you feel stranded off a major highway and dependent on others to go anywhere. And apart from getting to the pyramids, which are reasonably near, assume an hour plus journey to get anywhere else in Cairo. And depending on time of flight, allow loads of time to get to the airport which involves a journey right across the traffic-packed city...

We stayed here for four days at the end of our trip to Egypt. It is just a few minutes to the pyramids from here, but far outside of Cairo propper to do anything else. The grounds are very spacious and well groomed. The rooms are really just average but with all the amenities that the hotel offers it rather makes up for that. There are gift shops adjacent to the parking lot for last minute shopping. There is also a free shuttle that goes to town several times a day. We hired a guide/driver from the hotel to take us to the Pyramids for a reasonable fee and he was very helpful to us and warned us about the do's and don'ts when dealing with the vendors at the pyramids. This is an excellent place to stay when visiting the pyramids, but other than that, if you want to stay within Cairo, don;t stay here for the duration of your trip.

The Oasis was a last minute booking as we were let down by our holiday company. It proved to be a great place to stay. The rooms are set in beautiful gardens and are at groung floor level. The staff were friendly and the food and drink were set at reasonable prices. The pool is a superb place to relax between visiting the monuments. It was a generally relaxing and quiet stay and I would definately return again.
Just one thing to note - at the monuments you will get hassled and lied to by many people pretending to be official guides. This is all part of the enjoyment of the local culture but you can get fleeced. Get the hotel to arrange a taxi for you - they will take you to the giza pyramids or even Saquara and wait for you (for 4 Hours) at a cost of £12 GBP.
Do not go to carpet museums or papyrus museums - they are shops, all of them, yours will not be the exception. Egypt is a great place, even when you get conned you feel it has been entertaining and atleast you can retire to the Oasis
