“Five Star Christmas Party”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

In visits to Cairo, I have been fortunate to have attended a number of meals at Mena House in Giza. Although I have never been a residential guest, I can attest to the beauty of the hotel and its grounds as well as the exceptional professionalism and customer service proficiency of the staff.

My comments are regarding a Christmas function held at their establishment at which I was a guest.

The party was a luxurious affair hosted by an international oil company with employees in Egypt. It was a bedazzled spectacle, and the hotel and staff were up to the task. The food was gorgeous, fresh and international in nature. The variety and skillful preparation which exists in rare hotels and restaurants around the world. They demonstrated a fine selection of wines, including bubbles, which naturally added to the joyful celebrating nicely.

Definitely one to explore if you are invited to attend an event here, a must see if you are looking for a venue.

I am looking forward to my next opportunity to visit.

This hotel was unbelievable. Everywhere you looked it was beautiful. There is an old and a new part to this hotel. We stayed at the old part but did go to new for a bit of food and wine.
The room, well it was more like an apartment. A Queen size bed looked small in the huge airy room. A room with the view of the pyramids wich were a few minutes away. Sunrise in the morning was great.
The restaurant was second to none. Very well maintained and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
You could spend hours wandering around this spectacular hotel all day.
A perfect few day and a highly recommended hotel.

Room Tip: Old part of the hotel facing the Pyramids, naturally.

This is the place to stay in Cairo. Lovely grounds, buildings and large rooms. We had a pyramid view room, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the pyramids just outside your balcony. There is no need to leave the hotel - except to go on tours to pyramids etc. A large buffet breakfast gets you off to a good start. The swimming pool is great at the end of a day of sightseeing. There is even a separate kids pool, which our kids loved. There is also large fitness room. Wifi is not free however, and is available only in the lobby area. We ate at both the main restaurant, the one near the pool and the indian restaurant. All staff gave us great service and the food was very good, although the chinese menu at the main restaurant was not available, I am guessing due to the small number of guests. Drinks were also a little on the pricey side. There is a bank on site too, which came in very handy for changing and withdrawing money. If there is one thing that could be improved upon - would be nice to have some up-market soap, shower gel and shampoo/conditioner in the room.

I couldn't believe that view outside my window for 10 days were that of the pyramids.Large grounds, numerous restaurants, great food, great service. Beautiful historic hotel, felt like I had stepped into an old film set in the 40s.

We stayed here for 2 nights after a Nile cruise in October 2011. The hotel bar has brilliant views on the pyramids and is a great base for sight seeing in Cairo. The pools no longer have views of the pyramids as they have been moved around but the pool is lovely.

The food was brilliant in the main restaurant but I would not recommend the Indian restaurant as we were both ill within 3 hours of eating here.

The rooms are big and spacious and the beds are big.

Bear in mind that due to the location of this hotel it is a bit noisy in the pool area from the roads around the hotel but there is no noise in the rooms.

My wife and I stayed here at the end of June 2013. When we arrived at the hotel were shown to our room and to our surprise we had been given a garden room view even though we had paid for pyramid view room.
We were told that they would look into this and asked us to wait 15 minutes or so while they looked into this. After waiting half an hour in the wrong room and no one coming back to move us I phoned reception to find out what the delay was. A rather ignorant man explained that as far as they were concerned we had paid for garden view room and there is nothing they can do.
This was not the beginning of a great holiday that I had wished for. I phoned my travel agent in the UK, thankfully it was 4pm UK time. The travel agent phoned the hotel and put them straight. All in all over an hour was wasted. In the end we got our pyramid view room and what an amazing room it was. Top floor with the biggest of the three pyramids facing us.
During our stay we found majority of the staff to be exceptional. The reception staff to be honest acted like snobs and to put it bluntly bloody ignorant. I watched numerous guests walk past reception and I would see the staff turn away or go into the office. From my experience staying in other five star hotels the staff at reception at the very least would raise a smile or ask how your stay is so far.
Another thing which we noticed and I don't know why the tourism authority in Egypt haven't sorted this out is the touts outside the entrance to the hotel.
One example, coming back from khan el Khalil we were just pulling up at the security gates at the hotel when a young man jumped onto the bonnet of our taxi! I thought something had happened and he was trying to warn us, it turns out he was trying to get us to go on a horse ride. Now he knew that we were in Mena house hotel taxi, a company called Rawas, yet he still jumped onto the bonnet. Even the taxi driver was shocked. The security police at the gates just looked on.
I'm use to the aggressive behaviour at the tourist sites and it is to be expected but if you do go to Mena house then please be aware that this will most likely happen to you and believe me it is very scary when you can have 2 sometimes 3 men running at your car and pulling on the door handles and jumping on the car.
The hotel apart from these negative points is great. The history and the general ambience is great, something which I don't think any other hotel in Cairo can offer. Breakfast buffet was very good and the staff amazing. The Indian restaurant is ok but nothing like the food quality you find in the UK. My advice is try different restaurants in Cairo. Take a taxi from the hotel and they can wait for you. One restaurant to go to is the open air Lebanese restaurant in the Sofitel hotel. Its on the nile and wow what a view.
If you want a tranquil, historical and pyramid view hotel then Mena house is the place to stay. You can haggle with the taxi company based in the hotel for private trips outside and I think its better than jumping into taxis on the main road. The drivers are security aware and will keep you right which isn't a bad thing. I would have rated this hotel 5 but the reception staff and the crazies outside the hotel gates have to be pointed out.

Room Tip: Pyramid view room, 474, its the one we had, AMAZING!!!!!
