“Glad we picked this hotel”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

Really enjoyed our three night stay. Excellent food and restaurant staff.
Had a comfy first floor room with balcony overlooking the pyramids. Yes it was noisy but this did not bother us we had been warned by reading reviews. I took ear plugs which we did not need, the traffic noise is constant so it lulled us to sleep. Would love the opportunity to stay there again.
On the journey from the airport you get to see the real Cairo and this hotel is like paradise in the middle of mayhem.
The gardens are beautiful and well looked after. I am sure anyone staying in a garden room would get far less noise if they thought the traffic would bother them. Basically this is a very good hotel in a great location to visit the pyramids.

Overall a good hotel, but very empty when we were there so some restaurants were closed. However, the staff were excellent at "merging" the restaurants so we had a fine choice of food. We were "upgraded" to a room with "two big beds" when we asked for a room with double bed - their definition of "big" for a bed is much cosier than mine! Some decoration (particularly the carpets in hotel room corridors) was very tired and needed replacing. The staff were invariably helpful and polite. There is a nice quite big pool (from which, indeed, you can see the pyramids), but not heated so it was quite brisk. The jacuzzi was also not working. Sigh. As others have said it is a great situation for pyramids/Sphinx, and for Memnon etc., but a bit far out of Cairo itself, and from the airport. Time to either depends very much on time of day and day of week. All in all a good experience, but not out of this world.

Mercure Le Sphinx is really a good hotel. But certainly not five-star. I am sure things were much different in terms of quality when it was once a member of the Sofitel chain. But nevertheless it does the job with the marbled lobby, the pool area and the saxophonist playing in the evenings (just one thing: the area with the wooden floor in the middle, the old sofas and the staight back from the seventies red panels hanging from the ceiling should be revamped). Rooms OK, furniture dark and a bit outdated, carpet needs to be changed immediately (and in the corridors too), beds comfy and soft, bathroom with no bathtub, basic toiletries but clean enough.

Location puzzled me. It's close to the Pyramids if this is the star sight of your tour. But otherwise it's close to nowehere and believe me it's not a good choice to wander aimlessly around Giza. Downtown Cairo is too far and you've been warned. If you take a normal taxi, that's fine, but if you decide on the hotel "limousine" it may be more expensive and the driver may try to push you in a polite way to visit certain papyrus shops, local markets and all that jazz.

Staff is polite except a couple of cases in the reception desk. I'm glad that there was a bank at the hotel which saved us from a lot of hassle. Breakfast was fine, like in any other good hotel around the globe, and the same goes to the buffet-style dinner (a bit expensive though). Room service was quick and the snacks really nice with very good prices.

In general, if you know what you really want from your stay in Cairo, Le Sphinx may be a good, if not the best, choice. Rooms are very reasonably priced for the quality offered and the combination of sightseeing in the mornings and resort-type holiday in the evenings may work out just fine at this hotel. I went for the first. Cairo is a majestic city and I'm glad to see that tourism is getting back to Egypt after a year's relapse. So, the next time it will be a couple of days at Le Sphinx and the rest somewhere equally nice in downtown Cairo.

The hotel was nice enough to fit our needs. Realize you're in Egypt. It's the perfect hotel if you are looking to visit the pyramids, but a bit of a distance if you plan to use this as your base to explore Cairo. Our mistake. We managed quite well, however. A taxi ride will take about 1.5 - 2 hours to reach Cairo (This is how the hotel staff will tell you to go). We did that one time and then tried the Metro. The Metro will take you about 15 minutes and 1 Egyptian Pound to get to Central Cairo. You do have to take a taxi from the hotel to the Metro. The Metro was clean, and the people were welcoming. It will be crowded, but you don't have to sit in a taxi stuck in traffic.

DO NOT take the cabs sitting outside of the hotel. This will upset the staff, but it will save you in the end. The hotel cabs will barter a price and give a kick-back to the hotel. The hotel also offers a "limo" service. It is more expensive than a taxi but not really a better quality.

The taxi drivers speak a bit of English, and we were able to speak a bit of Arabic. It wasn't enough to overcome the language barrier at times, however. Arm yourself with some hotel business cards and a guidebook with pictures. The business cards can be given to your cab driver to get you back to the hotel; the drivers know the sites (and the Metro emblem) and will take you to whichever one you point at. Find yourself a black and white taxi (they'll actually find you), lean in the passenger window, tell the driver where you want to go (and/or show a picture of the place), and tell the driver you want him to use the meter. If he agrees, get in. If not, wait for the next one.

Besides the Pyramids, there really isn't too much else to do in the area. The breakfast was a bonus.

Room Tip: We had a garden view, and we could see one of the pyramids from our room. I'm glad we weren'...

Booked the hotel at heathrow after having to switch destinations at the last minute , and it far exceeded my expectations as hotel standards in Egypt are usually below what the usual standard would be. I would give this a strong 3 stars.

Pros
Good breakfast ( try and get it included in the room rate )
Good sized room
Fridge
Tea and coffee plus kettle in room
Flat screen tv with a couple of English movie channels
Balcony with chair
Good bed linen and towels
Great power shower ( no bath )
Good toiletries
Safe
Good breakfast
Wifi in lobby and round pool for free

Cons
No free wifi in rooms
Freezing very deep pool ( but there was a life guard all the time )
Limited menu for restaurant and room service expensive
Charged you to play pool upstairs

Would stay again

Room Tip: Don't bother upgrading the standard rooms are very good .
