Very cheap with friendly helpful staff, great location and beautiful hostel, lovely rooms.

This is a great travellers hang out. All rooms open out onto a roof top terrace absolutely full of plants (and a few friendly cats).
There are two sets of bathrooms, one with lovely hot water.
A kitchen service provides breakfast (very good, very cheap) plus teas/coffees/flasks of water and many other things throughout the day (from about eight am to five pm).
Above the roof top terrace is another terrace level, which is shaded and gets a cool breeze - perfect to cool off and escape the heat, even at mid-day.

Free wi-fi (the fastest we've had in Egypt so far).

We stayed twelve nights and enjoyed lounging around on all the compfy chairs.

The staff here are very friendly, and more importantly phenomenally helpful.

Met some great interesting people here, total traveller nexus.

Central location 2 mins from subway, nile, egyptian museam, and supermarkets.

Mosque nearby and Cairo itself provide a bit of noise.

Room Tip: Three are three wifi routers, if you want to browse the web from your room ask to get a room near one - other wise sit outside.

I stayed at Dahab hostel for a week in February. This is an amazing place and the best choice if you want to stay in Cairo. Cairo is crazy :) and can be really overwhelming. That's why it is so important to find a good place. After an intense day, trying not to die while crossing the street it is amazing feeling to come back to the hostel, talk with great people, watch stars (yes, this hostel is on the roof!) and just take a breath before another exciting day.
Location of Dahab hostel is perfect - the heart of Cairo. It's easy to get everywhere. Someone wrote here about going to Giza for 30 pounds by taxi - it's true. But if you want to do it even cheaper, much cheaper (4 pounds) and try some other kinds of transport, it is also possible and not difficult. First metro (metro station is 5 min from the hostel, the ticket costs 1 pound) then small bus (3 pounds). You can just ask at the reception, staff knows everything and is really willing to help!
This place is just perfect. Next time I'm n Cairo I'm going to stay at Dahab hostel for sure!

P.s. There is not so many cats. Only 4 :-)

Stayed at the Dahab for three nights in October. It's clean, there are numerous shared bathrooms kept spotless, the wifi is free, there's no shortage of fellow travelers to talk to, a friendly staff, and the location is just a couple blocks walk from Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum, the Nile River, and countless good koshery or shwarma restaurants.

Our complaints would include the price (we've since found much nicer rooms nearby at the Sun Hotel for 40 pounds less per night), the lack of privacy in the bathrooms (you're usually sharing them with at least one other person...eww), the fact all the bathrooms are unisex, rooms that were surprisingly ratty compared to the rest of the hostel (really tiny and the beds were just too spongy to be comfortable), cats everywhere you turn meant a lot of fights and torn up kitties, and frequent walks up the seven flights of stairs due to someone inevitably not closing the door all the way. Not a bad hostel, but not that comfortable either.
