We had a tour company take us through the city and sites of Memphis and Sakkara. It is essential to have an experienced guide.

This tour was arranged by Go Travel Egypt and as per the previous day, our guide was again Shaimaa and our driver was Mahmood.
Thanks to Shaimaa's expertise and professionalism we happily placed ourselves entirely in her hands and we were not disappointed. The visits were most enjoyable and she made sure that we saw everything we possibly could and that it was all done at our pace which being in our seventies was not always rapid.
I can thoroughly recommend Go Travel Egypt as an extremely experienced and competent travel company.

Because no-one knows where Memphis was, this museum is an unusual one: out in the middle of nowhere it seems, living off a "manufactured" history. There are a couple of interesting exhibits that make the museum ineresting - the massive statue of Ramses and the 2nd largest sphinx in Egypt (so we were told) - and it is cheap (35 Egyptian pound each) to enter, nevertheless the time and hassle involved in getting there makes the whole exercise of questionable value, and for us the whole thing could easily have been missed.

To see the grounds of the city that was once the capital of Egypt in the old kingdom, and to see the opulence and narciccistic structures that Pharaos like Ramses II had built, is to take a magical trip back in time.

Sakkara is a great site-no aggresive vendors like Giza. Visit in the morning. Use a local guide, like Casual Cairo Detours to get you there and back.
