Sakkara has many tombs you can enter and is well worth the trip despite there being only one large, stepped pyramid. Virtually no tourists there in early March.

Memphis really just has the giant statue of Ramesis II

A visit here was part of our Thomas Cook Signature package to Egypt. We saw this on the last day but on reflection it would have been better to have seen it on our first day in Cairo as Saqqara was the first pyramid and Mephis the oldest part of Egypt although part of the display here seemed like a reclaimation yard! The Statue of Remeses 11 was amazing as was the Sphinx which I preferred to the Sphinx at Giza. The Saqqara pyramid was half covered with wooden scaffolding as it is being repaired but still a remarkable site.

I really emjoyed Memphis and Sakkara, but while visiting the Alabaster Sphinx, a very sweet little girl kept smiling at me. Eventually her father or grandfather came over and said" She loves you, only 50 Egyptian Pounds for a photo of you and her.

Worth seeing these places if you have half a day to spare after visiting Giza / cairo museums etc. Views of the desert at Sakkara are fantastic if you havent seen a desert before .
If you book it through Memphis tours they will finish off with a fantastic lunch ( grill ) at a local restauarant

The ancient capital of Egypt dating back to 3100BC is a great starting point to see where the great king Menes ruled, creating Upper and Lower Egypt. The Alabaster Sphinx at Memphis is remarkable.
The necropolis of Sakkara is home to the famous step pyramid of King Zoser, the oldest of Egypt's 107 pyramids and arguably the world's first known free standing structure.
