“Hilton should be embarrassed”
Reviewed December 6, 2008

It's a tall hotel so you get a great view of the Cairo smog and can hear the 4:30 am call to prayers quite nicely. The rooms (apartments) are large, but they are old and dumpy. A few monogram towels and signature shampoo does not a Hilton make. The bathrooms and kitchen were decades outdated. The air conditioning system was unbelievably loud in our room on the 31st floor and our friends on the 12th floor. Combined with a lousy location, I'm not sure why Hilton choose to set up shop here.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in November and there were good and bad things about it:

positive:
apartment was large - could have slept 5 easily and had a large living area, 2 proper bathrooms and 1 extra toilet.
The rooms were generally nicely decorated.
staff were friendly
decent pool (thought not massive) with views of the nile

negative:
we could have done with more information in the room about the hotel and the surroundings (e.g. what times the pool and restaurant opened).
The kitchen didn't have a complete set of equipment - there was an oven but no shelves in it and no dishes to go in it. I imagine that if we asked for it we would be provided with some though.
The hotel is slightly further out of town than the Hilton website implied. It is walking distance from the museum, but the walk takes about 25 mins by the time you get across all the roads
There was a building site operating 24 hours a day next door. Being on the 17th floor this didn't really bother us, but it could impact you if you get a lower floor room, as could the busy road outside.

points to note:
there is a kettle in the kitchen, but you need to provide your own tea / coffee and we didn't see anywhere locally that sold milk.
there are at least 3 Hilton's on the Courniche El Nile, and most of the taxi drivers seemed to only know about the other two (the Nile Hilton and the Rameses Hilton), which are both near the centre of town.

Check-in: smooth and simple which was great given it was the wee hours of the morning and I needed my bed.

Room: Huge! Two bedrooms, an office room with spare bed, huge lounge/ diner, two bathrooms and enough toilets for us to have one each!!! and a kitchen.

The only problem was that the kitchen lacked a number of essentials for us to cook for ourselves (which was essential as my wife is a very fussy eater). Knives, forks and spoons were supplied, together with two wine glasses, two plates, one bowl, one frying pan and a couple of huge saucepans. What we lacked were coffee cups, plates for the four of us to eat at the same time and something to cook with in the oven. The hotel sorted out plates and cups and I went and bought a disposable oven tray (didn't think to ask the hotel for one).

Hotel Lounge: The children loved the breakfast here so we ate here pretty much every day. The selection wasn't great, but, breakfast is supposed to be simple isn't it? There was a selection of cereals, fruits, pastries and cold meats and cheese. The hot selection included eggs, sausages (beef and chicken), beef bacon. The cost was 65LE + taxes and service per person. The children ate free.

You can order extras at breakfast but I am not sure if you need to pay extra for them.

We had an evening meal here a couple of times, again for the children - pizza and spaghetti bolognese were eagerly consumed by them. Price was acceptable.

Pool: Nothing fancy, a simple 15m x 10m pool which was 265cm at its deepest. My only concern was that it did get deep very quickly, so you need to be in the water with young swimmers or prepared to jump in if they get into difficulty. There didn't appear to be any life saving equipment close to hand.

It was possible to order food and drinks from the lounge.

Whilst it would have been nice to have a pool area like that provided by the Conrad next door, it provided my children with hours of fun.

Security: Room entry via swipe card (just keep it away from mobile phones as these screw up the magnetic stripe). The balcony door doesn't have a lock on it but no one other than spiderman is going to get in via this route. Entry to the hotel by car is via a narrow secured driveway armed by staff with dogs and AK47s - which are loaded with real bullets.

Location: Close enough to downtown to be able to walk there. 20 mins to the museum on foot. Far enough away to feel like you are out of the hustle and bustle. Balcony views are impressive - even if you are looking out over Bulaq, rather than the Nile.

There are a couple of small shops that sell milk, water, pepsi, chips and other simple essentials(!). The store holders are very friendly and don't try and rip you off.

Arcadia mall is just up the Corniche, but, it isn't anything to write home about.

Shopping for provisions such as meat didn't seem to be readily available locally which could be a problem if you want to go self-catering. I got my driver to take me to a grocery store in Dokki - which is miles away. There may be one closer, but, that was the only one he knew of.

Staff: Helpful, but only really came into contact with them at breakfast/dinner. Their English was fine if that happens to be your only means of communicating.

Overall: Great! Everything we needed to keep an 8 and 10 year old occupied and plenty of space for us to move about without bumping in to each other. The place did seem pretty empty, but, would you want to stay in a hotel packed full of other guests?

I would stay here again without hesitation.

  • Liked — Huge room/apartment - close to downtown - but far enough away for some peace
  • Disliked — Apparent lack of local facilities for grocery shopping for self-catering holiday
