“The church of most popular warrior- saint in the Christian East”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2014

In the sequel of our visit to the Cairo Citadel and the wonderful mosques, within its walls, we moved toward the southwest, to experience the Old, Coptic Cairo, and this time, for the start with such exploration, we began with the Church of St.George ( Mari Girgis). It does matter to say here, that this church is not the Coptic, it is only located in Coptic area of Cairo. The Church of St.George is a Greek Orthodox Church. It is the only round church found in Egypt. It was built in the 10th century on the top of a Roman tower of the fortified town called Babylon. This church is also connected to the Monastery of St.George and now is the seat of Greek Patriarchate of Alexandria. Very interesting to do on this spot, is by ascending the steps along the Roman Tower, and see the relief of St. George killing the dragon on the outer brickwork of the wall.
Inside, there are the artworks depicting the St.George and his quest to defend the christianity.
The chapel inside the Monastery, which is dedicated to St.George offer historical and artistic interest. Here we can see an iron collar and chain, and the nuns of the Monastery, that are in the charge of the chapel, present for the veneration of the faithful, these two relics.
Now we know, that Holy Family, after they fled from Bethlehem, arrived in Egypt and took the shelter in a place now covered by the Church.
Beautifully adorned Church and Monastery of this Holy Saint, Roman soldier, the St.George.

“Coptic Church of St George Cairo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2012

this church was a special treat to see - there is a really magnificent carving of St George slaying the dragon on the fron above the entrance t o this church. Many tours to Coptic Cairo do not include this church on their itinerary - but it is just up some stairs to the right as you enter the Coptic section of Cairo so do not miss it! Insit that they guide take you there too
