The Wadi Digla is or could be a very nice place. There are some disadvantages: First I do not understand why this protectorat can be visited by car. On weekends there are too many cars in the wadi. The wadi is littered with plasticbags, plastic and glasbottles, broken bottles and other garbage. Any car, passing the gate should pay additional LE 25.- and should get a garbagebag. When the visitors with the car leave the wadi they should return the carbage in the bag and would get LE 15.- back. This is just an idea but something should be done to avoid more and more garbage in the wadi

I used to go to W.D. for mountain biking on it's beautiful adventurous terrain. also i have stayed there for a night camping and having a BBQ.
The industrial zone is just near to the entrance but as soon as you enter the protectorate, you will get excited trying to reach the end of the valley which is around 14 km Long and you wont notice any industrialization when you pass the gates.
The protectorate has two entrances North gate and South gate, normally visitors use the south gate because it's nearer to Maadi and has better serviced route.
Ticket prices are 3 L.E per person and 3 L.E per car until 5pm. if you wanna stay for the whole day or/and night you have to pay 10 L.E per person and 3 L.E per car but you will have to get permission from the ministry of Environment which is located in Maadi also.

This is about the only place to escape the pollution of Cairo and have choices to hike, run or mountain bike - join one of the many clubs to meet like-minded people.

We moved to Maadi from Chicago a few months ago. We found Wadi Digla to be a fabulous advantage where you could take your dog for an off leash walk(which is impossible in any other place in Cairo), even though there were some stray wild dogs, they only bark, and if you fake the move as if you are bending over to grab a stone, they immediately run away. It has a very friendly atmosphere especially when you encounter joggers and hikers. Contrary to what has been mentioned in other reviews the entrance fees is 3L.E. for Egyptians and kids are free till the age of 8. We have been there on several occasions, hardly any litter, and it was a relaxing but could be rigorous walk if you are doing it without kids. It closes its gates at 4:30 pm, so plan to be there either early in the morning, or an hour before closing time. It is enjoyable and mountain biking is also great.
