“Good stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2011

We stayed at the King Hotel 2 days; at the start and at the end of our roundtrip. It's a good stay for a reasonable price. Both rooms where clean, airconditioned and had a simple tv. Friendly staff. Just round the corner there is a 24hour supermarket, so if you forgot anything or just want a cheap bottle of water it's just a walk away.
The Nomad bar/restaurant on top has a great atmosphere and view as well as good food.

Stayed in this hotel twice during August as it was the start and end of our tour so be stayed a total of 5 nights. At first our taxi driver couldn't find the hotel then we were confronted by a demonstration at the Syrian Embassy which is across the road. You get used to seeing the millitary toting guns about all the time and most were friendly.
Egyption 3 star is not the same as an Australian 3 star. The rooms are very basic. We did have a/c but it was so noisy we had to turn it off. The first night we had queen sheets the next night we had single sheets placed together across the bed. Nights were continually broken by the sound of the lifts going up and down when they were working, half the time they weren't.
The first night we were encouraged to go up to the rooftop bar, when we arrived we were told they only had warm beers, I asked again 2 hours later to be told they didn't have any beers, they'll be here tomorrow.
In the lobby bar there was a/c and free WiFi and the staff were very attentive

I stayed at King Hotel for one week. The hotel is good in light of the reasonable price I paid, the location is great and close to almost everything, breakfast was good. I recommend it for those who want a hotel to stay in a quiet area and close to the markets and the metro station.

We went to visit our daughter who lives in Cairo not long after all the major "excitement". The King Hotel is not a Western hotel. It is across the street from the Syrian Embassy, diagonally across from the WAFD party headquarters, which is next to the So. Korean Embassy. Tiny streets. It became exciting as things started to heat up in Syria while we were there, and protesters and tanks arrived outside the Embassy. We were always safe.
Rooms are small and clean; front desk was not always helpful, esp. re: paying via credit card; small restaurant on ground floor was nice: internet, VERY nice waiters, and the BEST Turkish coffee! (and a good place to watch the Syrian Embassy.)
Rooftop bar had mylar shades down in March and was always empty. I would do it again because it is inexpensive, and the location worked for us.
The breakfasts were also very good.

Room Tip: That's a tough one!

This place was recommended by a tour guide, he arranged our booking and assisted us to check in. We booked for 3 nights at the end of our 12 day Egyptian tour, with another couple. We only stayed for 1 night. We checked out with our friends and moved to a more welcoming, well run 3 star hotel. We left because the room was unclean, the sheets on our double bed were single sized, the airconditioner didn't work, the bedside phone had no connection, the wallclock didn't work, we couldn't sleep because of noise (from the lift we think but not sure about that), the service on the terrific roof terrace was reluctant/disagreeable and the reception service was almost as bad. The staff didn't bother to ask why we were checking out early. More about the roof terrace (sorry it's long): the advertised opening time is approx 4:30pm. We ventured up to enjoy the view and some cold drinks at approx 5pm but it was closed. We could hear the TV and voices so we knocked, and after about 5 minutes the waiter opened the door. We could see the staff sitting around the TV, watching a soap opera, and were told that they were still cleaning and would open soon. We went back later and were allowed in (the staff were still watching the TV, while intermittently cleaning). We ordered 2 beers and waited.. and waited.. our drinks arrived but the beer was flat. We complained and the staff argued with us.. eventually the waiter shook the bottle of beer to get some bubbles and told us it was fine. After more argument we got fresh bottles. The staff went back to the TV. We drank our drinks, waited to order more drinks.. and waited.. eventually we went over to the staff and asked for more drinks. During this time was a lot of raucous conversation between the staff, the TV was turned up and there was music being played over the TV noise. Not at all relaxing or welcoming. Perhaps guests are only welcome on the terrace when staff are ready to work? There was further argument over the bill because they tried to make us pay for the flat drinks. All-in-all, I don't have anything nice to say about this hotel. We stayed in 8 hotels in Egypt, 4 hotels in Jordan and 6 hotels in Turkey - the this one was the worst.

It's a 3 star hotel in Cairo, so you can't expect too much. It's got comfortable beds, good location, helpful staff. Affordable stay in Cairo.

If you're on a budget and don't mind not having the fanciest room ever then this is for you. We were pleasantly surprised when we entered our room, it was roomy, clean and had comfortable beds. The bathroom was a little dark and the shower head could be changed so we didn't have to shower under a dribble but hey, we were able to get clean. The floor amused me, in our room it was wood laminate but it felt as if we were walking downhill as we approached the window and squeaked quite a lot. It was great to have two big windows that we could open up and overlook Cairo. It was a very convenient location, close to shops, the main street with a couple of good eateries and Giza. The room was definitely quirky but we enjoyed it and the rooftop bar, from which you can see the pyramids from is well worth checking out! Unfortunately they ran out of beer on our third night. We also hired a guy called Tariq outside the hotel near the little drink stand to take us out to Sakara to see the pyramids out there and would recommend him too.
