“Interesting place”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

Easy to get to and an interesting place to just wander around at. Take the metro to Mar Girgis station from anywhere in Cairo. When you get off it is right in front of you.

It is free to go in anywhere except the museum. There are a number of good websites that you can read to find out what there is to see.

The "Hanging Church" is well known. Stated as possibly the oldest Christian church in Egypt.

There are a number of other churches, a synagogue and the museum.

Well worth a visit.

“even in the rain”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

This was amazing. I have always been intrigued by Egypt but this area totally floored me. The history I learnt in just one day was amazing. It rained and was cold all day and I didn't care. I climbed to the top of a minaret, saw the room where Mary hid Jesus, found amazing tapestries of St George, walked in churches, mosques and synagogues. A most amazing day.

“Historic treasures”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

Coptic Cairo hosts many beautiful restored churches, offering a glimpse into another part of Egyptian history. The Hanging Church is a must-see. The outside entryway is lined with spectacular mosaics. Another of the churches is famous for being one of the places where the Holy family lodged during their exile to Egypt.

Wandering around the compound, you can visit many other churches as well as shops holding a great deal of souvenirs. The tapestries in particular are worth considering.

When we visited, the compound was guarded heavily, which made us feel more secure. Highly recommend visiting this historical area.
