Owner description: The oldest university in the world is built around this ancient mosque, which has been the center of Islamic scholarship since 975 AD.

We were told that I had to wear a full robe even though my head, neck and shoulders were completely covered and I had on clothing that was loose fitting and very conservative. The robes were filthy and torn in addition to being made of heavy and therefore hot material. I would not recommend going there. They insisted that out guide(an Egyptian) also wear one. They said it was required by President Morosi. Egyptian women coming to pray were also being required to put one on and they were clearly upset as well.

I loved it here. It is more beautiful if someone was explaining the history & the significance of the place, together with classes taking place. Their classes are different.

very large mosque, but spiritual work i found there not equivalent to its largeness. the imams working there are very conservative, which i do not favour at all.

Simply, you should visit this great Mosque to say: I've visited Egypt as a tourist !!
Every corner in this huge mosque tells a story about how Islam spreaded around the world

A beautiful center of Islam... and much more than that! The mosque is worth every visit, do not miss to try climbing one of the minarets. And enter the Column-Hall, feel the silence from the buzz in Khan el Kahlili (which is a stone threw away...). And keep in mind that you are in the mosque which have a strong authority over Islam - even though it is not "the vatican of Islam" as some under-knowledged people think....
